The largest national forest in the lower 48 is in Nevada. The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest has over 6.3 million acres, of which a few are located north of Tonopah...

FYI: What isn't Eglin AFB (those 743 acres) is a former bombing range and not considered safe for public use.

Your penance will be to share a cold beer when we share a boondocking site in Nevada. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Great pictures and list. Wow the Choctawhatchee National Forest is only 743 acres!

That's just how much is managed by the NFS:

Note: The last entry on this list, the Choctawhatchee National Forest, is in reality much larger than the 743 acres listed, but more on the order of 340,000 acres (1,400 km2). It is because the listed acreage is only that part of the forest that is under the management of the Forest Service. The vast majority of this forest is, uniquely, under the management of the United States Air Force, as part of the neighboring Eglin Air Force Base.

Actually you'll find locations pretty darn close on ForestCamping.com. Take a look at Angel Lake cg near Wells and South Ruby cg near Elko both in Nevada's Humboldt NF. Not interested in staying in a campground, dispersed campsite abound on the way.

I haven't finished researching this area yet, but I'll bet there's also some superlative ultra-remote Nevada boondocking available off the "other US 50" in Nevada in and around the Desatoya Mountains:

Another possibly interesting place to boondock in Nevada is the Virgin Valley and surrounding areas. We'll be going there in a couple of weeks to explore.

Now you went and did it!!! Ruined it! ๐Ÿ˜ž

Backcountry Nevada WAS one of the best kept secrets. I was perfectly content to let the hordes believe NV was all sagebrush playas and desert. Now everyone knows there is some truly world class boondocking in some of the most scenic backdrops in the 48. With EXTREME solitude of not seeing another soul for weeks at a time.

Your penance will be to share a cold beer when we share a boondocking site in Nevada. ๐Ÿ˜‰
