Seat heater-->Tank heater

We have moved to a colder climate and want to figure out how to keep camping despite below freezing temperatures. Need to make modifications in several areas but first was worried about the water supply.
I investigated installing tank heaters--ours are exposed. Tank heaters are pretty expensive, but seat heating pads are not--about $40 for a set. So I ordered a set that came with two pads and one controller but no instructions.
There were four wires that had to be hooked up--only two were what I expected--red and black. For this project I ordered some good 14 ga. Marine wire but in red and yellow because it was a bit cheaper than red and black. I wired an empty fuse on the electrical box with the yellow to hot and the red to ground. Then I promptly miswired the switch red to red and blew the new fuse! Duh.
Correcting that error was simple if counter-intuitive, red to yellow and black to red. But what to do with the green and yellow? I tried wiring them to a switch, thinking that they would normally go to the ignition to turn on only when the car was on, but that was wrong. I ended up finding a car forum that described a similar switch install and the explanation was yellow is the switch wire--shows the amber light in the photo that the pad is turned on and green is the power light--just shows power is available. Both are wired to the hot wire along with the red/yellow power wire.

The switch is located below the shower tray--in the open area that holds the drain pipes for the plumbing. I drilled the hole to the tank sensors a bit larger and got the connectors through to the tank area. The power wire is routed from the panel in the closet past the vanity in the bathroom through the chase behind the toilet and under the shower. Kind of a pain to pull, but nice that there is a path for the wire.

The pads are a white paper-like material with two adhesive strips. I cleaned the underside of the tanks well and then peeled off the protective strips and adhered them to the tanks.

Not very substantial but I plan to put some insulation board over them to hold in the heat and protect them from the elements.

The valve that goes to the gray tank is pretty exposed, but the black tank valve is more protected. I will need to think about how to keep these from freezing too.
I think just a little heat will keep the tanks from freezing up especially if I box them in with insulation. The temp of the pads was about 70 degrees with the heat dial turned all the way up.

Old Camping World was just east of I-70 near Youngfield, while new Camping World is just west of I-70 on Colfax.

There's a relatively new U-Haul Store at 5059 Ward Rd just north of that Truck Stop that has propane and easy access for RVs.

Hi EMD,

I'll still possibly see -35 C. What's worse is I'll be starting out with the RV at that temperature after having it sit for 110 days.

Thanks for the dump station info! I have used Prospect and they were nice--cost $10 I think. But no rinse water is available.
Would be great if Camping World had a dump station. I think I have been to their new site--the old one was right on 70, right? And this one is a bit further away. But I wasn't that familiar with the roads and may be wrong about that.
I'm surprised the truck station on 44th doesn't have propane. The only place I found it now that Ace has closed is UHaul. Arvada Rentals fills tanks but not RV's.

Ah cold storage, that is interesting. I'm assuming it should be disconnected though. I have not paid much attention to being in a winter climate for my poor RV. Sure would be a challenge to face -37 and be using it. I saw that little pad too so good to know that it might be enough watts for a plug in type of situation.

x2 on storing batts in the cold. Reading thru a few threads, there seems to be some confusion about this.

I believe dump stations at Prospect RV Park 11600 W 44th Ave, Wheat Ridge is open and available all year, as well as Clear Creek RV park 1400 10th St, Golden. I'm not sure if Camping World has a dump station in their new location or not.

Hi EMD360,

My record low is -37 c (-34f). Moving Sue and PhotoMike both have me beat at -40. Hats off to them!

If the battery is left in "cold storage" the colder the better. A heating pad would only lead to more self discharge.

Where I live 200 watts is needed for my enclosed but unheated waste tanks.

Here is a 150 watt from Amazon:

150 watt 120 volt

Yes, this seems like a good pad for 120 volt. Doesn't require the pet to sit on it to make it warm up--doesn't have a timer to auto off. Like the heating pads that pianotuna uses. Also it seems to heat up more than the seat heater I installed--says it goes to 95 degrees.
These little pads seem to make sense for winter camping or even storage purposes. I have to go out and get the battery and bring it inside for the winter. I did that last winter and it survived while the coach battery had to be replaced in the spring. A little heating pad might have made the difference.

I just bought one of these to try out as a foot warmer, when sitting at the computer:

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Heat-Heating-Pad-Bed-Mat-Pet-Reptile-Amphibians-28x42cm-20W-110V-US-Plug-/261...

I won't be walking on it; just resting my feet on it. I like the low draw, even at 120v.

If it works like it's supposed to, I may buy another one, or one half that size, for heating the fridge cabinet. I was thinking I could hook it up to one of those thermocubes.

I looked at those motorcycle grip hand warmers, as well, and seat heaters, and dog warming pads, and such.

As for Ebay, I have bought countless items. Yes, some are crap, but so is pretty much any cheapo item, regardless of where you buy it. And to be fair, I just recently gave a neutral feedback on an item (not negative, but neutral), and the seller insisted I take a 75% rebate, so his rating would not be affected, so apparently Ebay comes down pretty hard on this sort of thing. And yes, there is buyer protection on Ebay purchases. And to top that, I can usually buy the same item for the same price, or less usually, and free shipping, from a china based Ebay seller, compared to buying from a u.s. based Ebay seller.

Unfortunately where I live -40 is quite possible.

That is amazing--24 or 40 below in an RV! So you have two 50 watt heaters on each tank? I know 120 is better at heating that 12v but I wanted to be able to use the least amount of power and still have some freeze protection. I had more batteries at one time, but killed all four and now only have one Walmart DC.

Don't know how much winter camping we will do. But I wanted to try it. During our warm up last week though, I drained and winterized the plumbing. Didn't want to run electric heaters in there all winter. It may be awhile until I get the tanks insulated. I'm planning to build polyiso boxes for them.

Both craigslist and ebay have fraudulant sellers and there are not many protections for either. But I have found that most people are pretty honest--and can be relied on to represent what they are selling truthfully. But I have heard several horror stories about sales that were never shipped and poorly represented products. More so than retail outlets it is a buyer beware marketplace. I have been burned perhaps, buying a pump that almost instantly needed a rebuild but that may just have been bad luck. Thank goodness for good people though.

Hi,

I am using 120 volt heating pads from Walmart. My tanks are enclosed and I do have a good sized inverter.

The small pads produce the same number of watts as the larger ones (50). Walmart brand name is "Equate" in Canada. It does not do the auto shut off that so many other brands do.

Heat loss from the tanks is the issue. Enclosing them helps immensely. I know that I can keep my waste tanks above freezing with 200 watts of heat when it is -26 C (-15 f). Unfortunately where I live -40 is quite possible.

I no longer purchase any thing on evil bay because of how they show an item but what you get is not that item and when you complain you get a blast of s**t that I did not read the disclaimer which by the way was at the bottom of the 3 page of the listing....so no more will I buy on evil bay...

Well, no, didn't check out the wattage on the actual heaters--good point. I just checked out the price tag! This is radiant heat though so seems like it would work similarly to the hot water kind. Lower heat for a longer time equals higher heat managed by a thermostat.

So the real thing is better, no doubt.

The seat heater is approximately 1/2 the power of the small UltraHeat which is 6.1 amps-advertised for tanks up to 25 gallons. Also that heater is around $100 plus shipping. So my seat heater is not that great a deal if comparing wattage.

I shopped on ebay and the ad said I would get 2 sets but they meant only 2 pads. I had asked first and they said yes, 2 sets. When I got one, I explained that they should change their ad and they sent an extra set--so I got 2 sets for around $40. But that was a fluke.

I was thinking of installing the second set on the pump and fresh water tank inside the RV. I'm mindful of all the power being drawn from the batteries too.

Creativity is fun--why not experiment? ๐Ÿ™‚

Hi EMD360,

While I admire your creativity, did you think to check out the wattage on the "real" tank heaters? I believe it is around the 284 watt mark.
