27 Foot Good for State and National Park?

Hi,

Have folks found that a 26 or 27 foot 5ver is generally well accommodated at the state and national park campgrounds?

Thanks,
Bill

Yes I will be alternating types of site too. Also seems that clubs like Thousand Trails would be another alternative at times.

We have no problems finding someplace to camp near Federal parks. There are always commercial CG. Indeed we prefer to alternate commercial FHU CG with CG with minimum services.

Yes I was thinking about that...

I suppose life is filled with limitations. One would have to look ahead to work around them, but I am limiting myself to the shorter AC or Glacier Peak so that would be roughly a 30 foot limit without the tow vehicle and since RMNP supports up to 40 ft seems I can get into my favorite place. I will have to scope out the major parks I'm interested in.
Thanks,
Bill

That's true for commercial campgrounds but I assure you there are many Federal and State CG which won't take bigger RVs.

Thanks for writing. What length are you referring to as "bigger" RV?
Thanks,
B

In many cases bigger than 35 ft. Altho there are many sites limited to less than 30 ft. Yosemite for example only has a few sites in one valley CG that will take a 35 ft RV. Chiricahua NM only accepts short less than 29 ft RV's. I searched the nearby NF CG (near Chiricahua) and they had even shorter limits. Every park is different and there is no hard and fast length rule except that the longer your RV the more problems you will see in government CG.

You need to understand many of the Federal CG were first built in the 1930's thru the 50's. 40 ft long RVs were unknown. Campers looked more like this:

Arctic Fox 25Y Travel Trailer
2018 RAM 2500 6.7L 4WD shortbed
Straightline dual cam hitch
400W Solar with Victron controller
Superbumper

I've run into issues with the combined length. Trailer is only 21' but add the 20' truck and you are over 35', once you disconnect you need even more. Feels kind of silly asking for a 35' or 40' site at a National Park when they only have a couple.

Oh, the 27'10" is the Fox Mountain series. Didn't think that was 4 season. I was focused on the Arctic Fox

You are correct the Arctic Fox 27-5L is 29'5"... Glacier 26RDS is 30'9" - total lengths.

Is the AF 27'10" you are mentioning a 5th wheel? To me smaller is better.

<30' generally no problem at all. The problems really escallate as you approach & pass the 35' mark.

Over the years we have found that not all trailers will fit all the sites in any given park, no matter what size the rig is. Everything is a compromise. And when it comes to state parks and national forest campgrounds, no two parks even in the same state are alike as far as camper length accommodations are concerned.

You will have some trouble fitting in the CGs on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Even our 27' nose to bumper TT had a hard time fitting in most of the sites. The 30' nose to bumper we have now. will only fit is 3 or four sites at Julian Price, and will NOT fit thru any of the pull thrus. they are long enough, but the TT, and TV will not make it thru the curve of the site with out hitting the rocks they use for curbing.
