CA to Ruby's Inn Utah

Gonna haul the trailer and toys... up to Ruby's later this month. What is your preferred route and what is the road like?

My trailer weighs around 21-22k loaded. Looking for the best (easiest haul) route even if it means more miles.

Never been to Ruby's so I would appreciate any list or idea of must see things, rides or general thoughts on Ruby's and the area.

Have the book and map for the Paiute- which are great resources for sure.

I missed the first round of language issue, my wife was with our two boys I was fixing an ATV. She said the staff avoided the confrontation. Since they weren't at the pool when I heard about it I went to the management. Next day I confronted the kids, they didn't really change, staff did nothing so they had their boss come down on them. These were not your typical 13yo boys, we're talking 18-25yo "boys" that knew they were out of line and didn't care.

We didn't have any 2 strokes, however we did notice power loss in our 4 strokes at high elevations. At Ruby's Inn no problems. I took a trail, I think it was part of the Beaver Loop that got me up to over 10,000' and I really had a huge power loss, I was barely going 5mph and probably should have turned around but I made it to the top and down the other side. If I was going to be there longer I'd jetted it or gone dial-a-jet.

Interesting to hear the info on the language at the pool- that will not float well with me. Nice but firm is no problem for me! 🙂

Will definitely hit some of the atv trails on the two-wheelers.

Any of you run a two-stroke up there and in Marysvale? Son wants to ride his KX 65 and I am a little concerned about jetting- I am going to go down 2 jet sizes from stock I think. I will bring a 4-stroke for him too but he loves that smoker!

I remember taking the 15 to 14 in Ceder City. Bit windy of a road but not bad. I drove my 40 ft Funmover up there towing a Jeep and had no issues I recall in 2008. Saw some large trucks on the road too. The 14 dead ends with the 89, turn left to the 12 to Bryce. Good place to ride for a few days. Great for RZR's. I do remember coming around a trail with the rzr and someone had strung barbed wire up. . About chest high. RZR broke right thru it but on a dirt bike would've hurt..bad. That was on the North East side.

As the other poster said, lots of Europeans, some foul mouthed. Best to watch your kids around 'em. I remember they became more polite when confronted politely but firmly.

A few other things...
Coral Pink, while we were there temps were well over 110, morning and evening rides were great - movie time during the day! There are Rattle Snakes so be aware, we had one laying outside our Motorhome in the evening soaking up the heat from the road. Ice Ice Baby... make sure you stock up before you head out to CP, there's nothing out there but the Dunes.

Bryce, heading out you'll take the connector Route to the various trails out by Tropic Res. While on that connector route you will pass a Prarie dog field, if you stop and shut down they will eventually pop up. We spent 40 minutes on our ATVs watching them watching us. You can download maps before you go, make sure you take maps out with you. It's easy to get confused/lost, everything is marked but you need to know what connects with what.

Ruby's Inn, you'll find a lot or Europeans with vacation RVs. If you have kids, stay with them at the pool, we had some pretty raunchy language issues with some of the folks on Holiday. I was underwhelmed eating at their place, skip they buffet IMHO. Onsite grocery store is pretty well stocked but not cheap.

I don't pay much attention to hills with the TT as it's only 8k max and I tow with a diesel.

That said, I love to play on the RZR, and the Bryce canyon area is a great place to explore. They generally have a good assortment of maps available at the store there at Rubys, some of which are pretty good for ATV trails. You can ride right out of the Rubys Inn/Campground area and have a lot of great country to explore, limited mostly by how many miles you want to ride. I highly recommend looking in to riding the Casto canyon trail if you've got machines under 50 inches. It's got areas that are very similar to riding through Bryce canyon itself. Google Casto canyon, Bryce canyon country and similar searches and you'll find lots of good info on trails to ride. The area west of Tropic Reservoir can be very scenic as well and there are numerous dirt roads to explore there as well.

Make sure you get a map, take a GPS, and carry extra fuel as we generally ride well over 100 miles a day exploring down there, and Cell phones don't work in most of the more scenic areas.

Ruby's tells you to come in on the 20 from the South but it looks to be a little longer-

We had a few other stops on our way. We went from Zion down to Coral Pink Sand Dunes (Hwy 59/389/89) then took Hwy 89 up to Ruby’s Inn - I found it to be an easy drive up Hwy 89. We then headed up to ride the Paiute trail via Marysvale. The scenery and riding at Coral Pink was amazing, very glad we rode there. I really enjoyed all the trails from Ruby’s Inn as well, though there are more trails around Marysvale I found the scenery around Ruby’s Inn to be better. I would avoid the tunnel at Zion unless you know for sure you’ll fit, but it can back up too. If you’re going that way I’d pull off at Coral Pink for a ride.

Northern or Southern California?

I will assume you are coming via southern Calif, Just after ST. George, get off I-15 at Hurricane, go to Kanab, north on Hwy 89 to Panguitch, then east on Hwy 12 to Ruby's.

An alternate route is to stay on I-15 until Hwy 20 which is likely faster, but I think the first route is more pretty especially when you get on Hwy 89.

Either route will be fine with our rig.

Nearby Kodachrome Basin State Park is an interesting stop, particularly late in the day if you like photography.

A nice drive (without the trailer & as long as it isn't wet) is Cottonwood Canyon Road. A short drive to see Grosvenor Arch, or, with good conditions, drive 47 miles to US 89 near Big Water (a little west of Page, AZ). While a high clearance, 4 wheel drive vehicle is recommended, I've driven it in my RAV4.

You should check with the BLM Visitor Center in Cannonville for road conditions - it is sometimes closed due to flooding or slides.

Another stop about 15 miles from Bryce is Red Rock Canyon. Both camping & hiking opportunities.
