Double towing

Question for those who double tow. Do you find overnite camp ground that can accommodate you enroute without unhooking, or do you stay at wallyworld or something similar. This will be my first year to do so and I will be 64 ft long. Thank You.

I don't think double versus triple is worth arguing about, since in Rv's, everyone will know what you are talking about.

But just for reference, in CA, you need a "Doubles Endorsement" on your class A commercial license, in order to pull two trailers. There is no triples endorsement, since CA does not allow pulling 3 trailers.

Also, if pulling two trailers is triple towing, then I guess all of us who just pull one trailer must be doubles towing, right? Just doesn't make sense or sound right.

But the fact is, plenty of people will call it triples, and I always know what they mean.

It's only called triple towing by those who know what they're talking about. The legal definition, as used in state and fed statutes, is a pickup pulling a 5th wheel with a trailer behind is a double tow.
Just because some websites use the term 'triple tow" doesn't mean it's right. It only means they don't know or understand what the definition is.
BTW, I taught vehicle law for many years and was one of the first in the state to be certified in FMCSA enforcement. How much legal training do you have in the topic?
If you contact an law enforcement agency and talk to anyone of the officers trained in truck enforcement then ask about triple towing they'll assume you know what you're talking about and respond about a tow vehicle pulling 3 trailers. Why? Because that's the legal definition.
Here's a clearly worded definition from MI which mirrors the federal statutes:
Under Section 721 of the Michigan Vehicle Code, pickup trucks equipped with a fifth-wheel assembly may, with certain restrictions, tow two trailers. This double trailer combination is sometimes called a recreational double. Drivers must pass a knowledge test to receive their recreational double endorsement. The information in this pamphlet will help you prepare for the knowledge test. Definition A recreational double is a pickup truck pulling a fifth-wheel trailer, designed for recreational living purposes, with a second trailer attached to the rear of the fifth-wheel trailer. The pickup truck must have a towing rating equal to, or greater than, the weight being towed.

Well maybe in your mind it is. When I double tow I have two trailers I'm towing thus "double". Now if I had three trailers it would be "triple" which is what I've been using for the last 50+ years. Just like double or tandem axe means two or triaxle means three. If triple means 2 trailers to you all the arguing in the world won't change your mind.

I have found that truck stops,, the bigger ones have areas where we can rest for a few hours without having to break up the combo. Most times I will disconnect the boat at the boat launch parking lot or near my site if there is room,, Then I will work my trailer over as far as I can to fit the boat in there.. Some places do not allow this and I have to rent a boat slip which includes trailer parking.

Or as I said,, I will dock boat and make room at camp site for trailer.. HAve not had an issue yet!

Back to the OP's question. I have some overnite campground spots, that I can stay connected, but most times I have to unhook the boat. There's always a good spot to unhook & hook back up. I always find a site to have the boat at the campsite.

We tow triples (three trailers) here in OK.
In the summer its usually a truck pulling a 5th wheel trailer/ski boat with a PWC trailer bringing up the rear.
In the fall during hunting season the same truck pulling a 5th wheel trailer/horse trailer/flatbed trailer full of horse gear or ATVs.

I towed doubles commercially (two trailers) for over 11 years. Usually it one of my one ton DRW pulling a heavy GN equipment trailer with a 14'-16' cargo trailer full of tools bringing up the rear.



I pulled rv doubles.... a 5th wheel trailer with a 2500 chevy and a 3400 lb bass boat bringing up the rear (63') for eight years. Most places we stopped for the night had a drop area for extra vehicles at no charge.

Here's a good site that discusses "triple towing" (a boat, etc behind a travel trailer or 5th wheel being towed by a truck). It lists states where it is legal. All others, Not.

I work for one of the big two shipping companies and its "pulling doubles" if two trailers and "pulling triples" if three..... I won't get into Rocky Mountain doubles and a few other weird combinations.
