Wondering if anybody has used the swivel wheel or Idaho tote system to tow a golf cart behind a FW?

we've had 2 .... a single wheel and a two wheel .... if you are going this route, don't go cheap .... if not properly designed and built, the swiveling action of the tire(s) when on gravel can catch and snap .... I have one in the back yard right now .... if I was going to buy another it would be an Idaho Tote, they put out the best one I've seen .... don't believe the line that they are an extension of the camper and not a separate trailer .... here again, I know from experience that NC considers them to be a trailer .... the caution about overall length are valid

I was going to build a swivel-wheel cart deck as well, actually I bought almost all the parts but after talking to Cedar Creek they brought up a point I hadn't considered, Lippert would void any present and future warranty on my fiver's frame due to what they consider "frame modification" (total B.S. on their part) and Cedar Creek thought that the added weight on what is a 12' distance from the rear wheel to my end cap might pose a problem with the over-all structure of my Daydreamer! Also a state trooper who told me that in both Florida and Georgia it's considered a trailer and there fore verboten I opted to simply buy a second cart and leave it at our Florida location and avoid all the possible drama.

Legal issues aside, the advice from Carriage builders some time ago was nothing more than 300# on the back of the trailer, which includes the weight of frame reinforcement & hitch.

My thought at the time was to carry a 250# bike. All up I'd be well over the 300# mark.

There's a difference between "illegal" and "requires endorsement". It is not illegal (as a blanket term) to double tow in FL, but by the letter of the law, you need to have a CDL.

In FL, you cannot "legally" get pulled over for double tow with a RV if that's the only infraction. There has to be some other primary cause for the traffic stop. Of course, it could be an additional infraction or used against you in a court of law in the event something more tragic happens. An LEO in FL cannot assume that you've broken the law simply because you may be double-towing without the proper endorsement. In the same way that a LEO can't pull you over just to check your license.

This is not to condone breaking the law, but just facts that one should be aware of. Don't know about other states, but this is FL ;-). I drive 40k miles a year and see RVers double towing all the time without interference from LEO's.

We traveled through, and stayed in several states that don't allow double towing, including Virginia. We spent about a week in Virginia and had no issues, and were never given a second look by LEO's. I believe it is the confusion about whether they are considered a second trailer or a part of the fifth wheel. Of course YMMV.

I missed the part where he just asked about posters from Florida.

My friends had one and had to have it tagged and registered as a trailer for insurance purposes. It comes with a MSO so it's a trailer not a frame extension. They are very handy. But in Florida you can get pulled over and be required to drop the second trailer on the spot.

Thanks!

I like some of the new 5th wheels that have a small, golf-cart sized garage so a trailer tote isn't necessary.

We pulled a Smart Trailer behind our Big Sky for a couple years. We had the double wheel model and loaded two motorcycles on it. It worked very well and the main concern was the added swing to the rear end when turning.

We checked out swivel wheel and found the single rear wheel one was rated at 600 lbs which full size golf carts will exceed that weight. We looked at the Cricket mini golf cart and at 310 lbs would work with the single wheel. We are till kicking around the idea and we do have a class 4 hitch on the back of 5er.

I didn't think it was legal to triple tow in Virginia, but last year going through Gate City I saw a fifth wheel with a utility trailer behind it. What was interesting about the fifth wheel was a trooper was in line a couple cars back from the trailer. Who knows they might have stopped them after we moved on.

According to the company in Lakeland who makes them (SMART TRAILER) FL considers it a trailer and classifies it as triple towing

I have seen them behind fifth wheel units going down the interstates here in Virginia...

google image

Some are two swivel wheels and some are a single swivel wheel. I think if it was me I would prefer the two swivel wheels model.

These are generally accepted in many states as an extension of the fifth wheel trailer and and not a stand alone trailer. One should check with the DMV folk where your trailer is licensed and see if they are acceptable...

Like listed above don't go over your overall length...

Overall length of rig before adding trailer? 65 feet seems to generally be the limit.
