Hitch Pin Help

Just bought a new 33IK Silverback and using a Curt Q25 hitch.

Trailer is 37' total length and a GVWR of 14K. Pulling with a 2017 GMC 1 ton SWB Diesel.

On the way home I noticed chucking. I'm thinking about either a Morryde or a Trail-Air hitch pin.

I'm looking for real world experience and not opinions.

I have the Curt hitch in my 2016 Ram 3500. I recently purchased a 2006 Mobile Suites equipped with a Trailair pin box. The combination does not work well together. Chucking is so bad it will sometimes lock up your seatbelts. Cause is the combination of the Trailair pivoting lower jaw moving the Curt hitch head which has a low pivot point. Vertical motion of the Trailair jaw pivot point causes horizontal motion of the hitch head pivot point jerking the truck back and forth. Another RVer in my camping club has a Curt hitch and the MORryde pin box and tells me he tows smoothly.

Problem with going to the MORryde is only controls fore and aft, the TrailAire controls up and down. Mine has the TriGlide for for and aft. I towed our 18K 36' MS with B&W and TrailAire no TriGlide and it towed very well.

Notice the B&W pivot point is at the same elevation as the kingpin. CURT is several inches below causing the head to move fore and aft.

I have been talking to Ben at MORryde and he sent me a -05 spring that is rated for 14K to 18k I believe. I tried it and it did help some. They are willing to help me with this if I bring my rig down to them. Their engineers want to see the harmonics issues between the Curt and their pin box. Looks like I will be taking a ride to Elkhart. I will keep you all updated.

I have a Curt Q20. When we bought the Montana it chucked really bad. Replaced the pin box with a 5th Airborne. Tows great.

You have me thinking B&W Patriot, that is a real interesting design difference between most 5er hitches and the B&W. "

Disagreed???? HA ca't believe that!

What got me going on this was a guy saying the combo between his TrailAire air bag hitch and his Curt caused chucking. So think about the lower jaw pictured above moving up and down causing the Curt head to move back and forth.

Wow, that's a lot of money for a worse problem, I'm really sorry to hear that.

I have the truck and trailer in my sig: '14 Ram 2500, crew cab, long bed, 4X4. The only mod to the truck is Timbren's. The 5er has the OEM standard extended pin box. Hitch is a Curt Q20 using the Ram 5th wheel prep mounts on the frame and I use a teflon lube plate instead of grease.

90% of the time I DO NOT have chucking. I will get some chucking on jointed concrete roads but for the most part it's a smooth easy ride.

Someone recently mentioned the geometry of the hitch head on the Curt/RAM Q25. There is a lot of distance from the Curt pivot point and the hitch plate/king pin. The B&W has virtually no offset. Think about it!!!

You might have already considered this, but you need to make sure that the Mor Ryde is the correct model for your rig, as related to GVWR. When you buy it, the selling company is supposed to make sure the pinbox mathces the GVWR of the 5er. If its not right, I can see how it would make a tremendous difference.

I can sense your frustration. When we hooked up our new to us 5er we were shocked at the chucking. We are talking about heads bouncing off headrests and my wife having to hold her chest. My trailer did not have a replaceable pin box and the Torflex axles did not allow shocks. I tried the Bilstiens, no help. I had to face up to the fact that my trailer for many reasons was creating both bouncing and chucking forces and my B&W hitch was transferring them very effectively to my truck.

I did my research and as posted previously ended up with a TrailerSaver TS3. Fortunately, bouncing and chucking forces are timed events. As the front of the trailer is pushing down it is also pushing forward. The TS3 has a high hinge design so as the hitch head is pushed down against the air bags the head also rotates forward eliminating the chucking forces. As I see it, this is the major difference between the BD3 and TS3 hitches. The TS3 is an ingenious design and it works. As I go over bumps now I still get the impacts from the truck tires, no getting away from that. However, I feel nothing as the trailer goes over the same bumps.

I know you are probably real tired of writing checks. Hensley has a money back guarantee if you aren't satisfied. I have no ties to them and am just a very satisfied customer. Leaving in a couple of hours on a trip. Looking forward to the tow.

Has anyone tried the Liberty Joy Rider suspension upgrade? It is a step up from the plain Joy Rider shock kit and clams to calm down the suspension almost like the Morryde IS. I know it's not a IS, but a lot cheaper.
