Hitches

A thought occurred to me today
From time to time people worry about having their trailer stolen. I can say this a far less and issue then travel-trailers, due to the fact that fewer thieves have 5er hitches.
But even fewer have "specialty" 5er hitches.
What is a specialty hitch, well, it's one where a special hitch is required.

Like the Andersen Ultimate hitch that requires a ball set well above the bed. No one with a conventional hitch is going to be able to connect to the trailer without taking the Andersen adapter off it.

Like the Pullrite SuperGlide, with the capture plate attached to the kingpin. With that capture plate, if you hitch to a regular hitch bad things are going to happen the first time you try to turn a corner.
Taking a capture plate off can be, time consuming.

Like the Pullrite ISR Superlite, which mounts an upside down ball on the trailer (kinda like an inverted Andersen).

When someone tells you to buy the same rig they own, listen, they might be right. When they tell you to buy a different rig then they own, really pay attention, they probably know something you don't.

When I took mine off the all six bolts had rusted, four to the point where I twisted an allen wrench trying to break it loose. I finally cut the plate off.

That is exactly why swapping the bolts is part of my PM service every Spring...

I have seen on twin axle boat trailer.... steel cable locks.. goes between spoke/holes in wheels...

like bicycle cable lock but much more heavy duty...

locking both wheels together.. no rolling.

If worried about it in storage one sure way to keep it is to remove the wheels on one side. What thief travels with a jack, wheels & lug nuts?

I agree that thieves need to be more prepared to steal a 5er, so all us TT people can do is lock it up best we can. I'm considering how to lock one tandem wheelset. Any ideas?

I'm way more concerned about someone just breaking into it.

My capture plate takes almost 3 minutes to remove..

No idea where you are located, but Spring is near, and you'll have lots of things to do.

Having a TT stolen from my driveway, this thought occurred to me when replacing my SuperGlide with a lighter, less maintenance demanding Reese. But I did it anyway.

I'll have to rely on the pin lock. The TT had a padlock on the hitch and that didn't slow them down.

So what's your point? Or is there any? Just a rambling thought?

Hopefully you're not suggesting that people consider buying a certain type of hitch because it may seem to make the 5th wheel more theft resistant.

King pin lock works well.
