How much should I expect to pay for a 5th wheel hitch?

I've never had a 5th wheel trailer but see myself getting one next year, so I'm wondering what brand or options should I get for a personal 5th wheel for traveling across the country on camping trips?

I think I've seen them with air bags built in?
Is that good or a weak point?

I have a '97 long bed 4x4 cummins diesel 5 speed dually truck.

& does it alway get mounted directly centered above the rear axle?

Are some much easier to remove?
I've seen stakebed trucks with retractable 5th wheels in the bed, can that be done in a pick up truck?

I bought a Trailer Saver hitch in 2003 and still going strong. The OP asked how much to pay for a hitch. Don't remember him asking for all the bashing that went with this post. If you want a good hitch, you will pay for it. If you want a hitch that will drag your trailer, you can find them used for $50 up. I have 2 air bags and a swiveling head. In 2003 I paid over $1800. I understand they are close to $3000 now. BUT, worth every penny. It's neat to look in the rear veiw mirror and see the trailer hitch just floating with the bumps and no chucking.Remember the old saying " you get what you pay for"

Ignore brand bashers as those that do generally have never used the product. Kind's like bash a Dodge and say I've read on this or that forum GM and Ford trucks are the best. Pure BS.
My 5th wheel trailer weighs 11200-11400 lb range and use a 16k Reese since '97. No issues at all. I use a come-along hanging in the tractor barn to raise and store the hitch.

Not knowing what weight 5er you will be looking at doesn't help in a selection. You sure don't need a high priced hitch for a 5er under say 10k-12k unless you just gotta' have one. Air bag hitches are better suited for heavy trailers 12k-13k and up.

I like 3" forward of the rear axle on my long bed trucks for my GN and 5th wheel trailers.

Some of the hitch brands mentioned are heavy in weight. Spend some time on each hitch makers website.....ask questions and listen to what they have top say...... and see how much the hitch weighs.
Your long bed truck doesn't need a sliding hitch.

Hitches like the Anderson and PullRite ISR Superlite weigh in the 50-60 lb range and in a class by themselves.

I buy used trucks, RVs and hitches. I've been using the same $150 15k used drawtite 4 way rocker hitch for 20 years and 3 different trucks. I had a 97ctd but it was 3/4T srw. My 3.54 axle ratio was rated to tow 10500 and the 4.10 axle went up to 12500 towing. Hopefully you have the 4.10 in that dually
I don't know the tow caps for the dually. It wouldn't be too hard to install your own hitch on that 97 cuz it has a C channel frame. I've been looking for another used hitch for my latest tow vehicle project (2012 CCLB CTD auto) but I want a hitch with a capacity that matches this truck. I've seen what I want for $350 w/o the rails but I don't used them anyway. Craig

My truck is a beast, Not sure about my gear ratio?
But my 1st gear in my 5 Speed manual trans is really low!

Just my personal opinion, based on watching these forums for years, get anything but a Reese. Tho I harbor doubts about the Anderson, just based on the flimsy appearance.

No way on earth I would pay $1,000.00 for a fiver hitch.

Thanks!

There's a thought, I just called Eckhart & was $1600.00 installed.

Torklift told me $1,600.00-to $2,600.00.

Ouch!

Torklift told around $500-600.00 just to install.

That is very expensive. I would be inclined to purchase a custom fifth wheel rail kit for your Truck and do the install myself. ETrailer.com has videos of the installs and generally they are not to bad looking.

As far as craigslist goes, I saw An Andersen Ultimate hitch for only $200 ish on there the other day. I see Reese and Curt all the time for cheap. Heck, I see B&W hitches on there from time to time for very affordable prices.

I do understand the chucking issue and trying to solve the problem. And I understand needing the pieces in a timely manner. Sometimes you just can’t wait for a deal.

If the trailer you want is a chucking or bouncing nightmare you might find the cost of the hitch to be inconsequential. Sometimes the hitch has to serve as a remedy and the price goes up, a lot.

Rails are installed perpendicular to the pickup bed, but the hitch goes lengthwise. I just got an Andersen hitch and so far have been very impressed with the performance.

Really? Shows what I know about sliders. The store displays always show them with the rails side to side.
