Hwy 191 in Utah

I am hopeing someone can help us on this forum. We want to go to Santa Fe, New Mexico from Interstate 80. I see south of Moab, Ut. on Hwy 191 there is a hill with about a 11% grade. Its called Driveshaft Hill.
Is there anyone out there who knows that hill and is it 11%. We live in the Oregon and if someone knows a better way to get there please let us know.

Allworth, I think some early 06's got the LLY. Wonder if they are 5 or 6 speeds like the LBZ?

We have pulled it a couple of times with no problem. In fact I have never had an overheat problem in the Rockies or in Eastern mountains.

MY 06 is LBZ.

Now that I got rid of my lemon Silverado 2006, I don't worry about hills or heat. For 1 1/2 years this diesel model overheated and Chevy could never figure it out. Diesel forum had 1700 posts on the topic!!!

You have a 2006 with a LLY motor? Chris

If the hill you are talking about is on 191 near the Wyoming border, then it is a long gradual downhill to the dam at Flaming Gorge. Then farther south, you go up a steep grade out of the river valley. I would guess as others have said, it is maybe 1/2 - 1 mile of steep. Just downshift and go slowly.

I believe that the hill you are talking about is Combs Ridge and it would only have an effect if you were northbound. It is really not a long climb and I have done it in all kinds of rigs with no problem.

What he said! ^ And I read that the hill is Northbound not Southbound.

I must of gone down it a few years ago, as we took 191 from Moab all the way to I-40.

Going on 491 to Cortez sets you up to go by Mesa Verde NP, which is a must see!

Last time we drove that hill we were driving a '99 F250 6.8L V10 towing a fully loaded 11K 32' Komfort and had no problem.

I agree. Don't be afraid to run the RPM up into the 4k range as that's where you make your h.p. Drive by RPM and =not= speed. Might want to look up some specs on that engine and see where the torque and h.p. peaks are to give you a starting point. Just watch your temps.

If you are going to Santa Fe, NM aren't you going to cut over to Cortez, CO on Hwy 491 at Monticello, UT?

If so....you shouldn't get to that grade.

You should be able to chug up it at 30-35mph with that rig. It's not that long of a grade at about 1/2 mile. Just downshift early to keep your rpm up, and you should be fine. That is a beautiful route to drive.
