Landing gear cross braces

As I continue to do research in advance of picking up our new 5ver, I have seen info about cross braces helping keep the 5ver stable. We will sleep in it a couple of times before I do anything but I got to thinking why wouldn't ratchet straps do the same thing?

Am I missing something?

A 2x4 and a couple C clamps works well and is cheap. Same for the rear stabilizers. That's what I use (pictures available). Why spend $300? You can even paint the 2x4 to make it look nice.

C clamps? why not duct tape and do ole Red proud...... :B

I use home made cross stabilizers similar in function to the JT. I guess the wife and I are still young enough to need stabilizers to keep from excess shaking. ๐Ÿ˜›

google up winfield stabilizers and watch the video on them.

If you stick BAL's between the wheels, I think the winfgield's should do as good as the JT's.

I am satisfied with that approach

A lot of felt movement is dependent on the 5th wheel. Long, tall, heavy 5th wheels are more likely to have movement that is annoying. Especially ones that have a lot of ground clearance leading to lots of leverage on the stabilizers. We have the JT Strongarms. Drinks would slosh out of our cups without them. ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks for all the replies. We plan to try a couple of outings and see how things go.

Only way a JT strong stabilizer can't work is not knowing how to set them up. Awesome deal for us.

Like ljr ours came with JTs. Like ljr, we think they make zero difference. Have spent 6 years in the rv and are used to the movement and don't even set the jts anymore.

We must be odd because the little bit of movement we have does not bother us.

I never have quite understood all the "bellyachin'" about a little movement. We don't even put down the stabilizers anymore.

Maybe it depends on how much time you spend in your RV? We are on our 17th year of fulltiming and I put up with interior movement for almost 8 years. Dutch did put a Bi-Pod up and also added additional rear arm jacks over those years but there was still too much interior movement from walking and it was especially bothersome in the wind.
We use our permanently installed stabilizers daily and for us we wouldn't be without them. We have almost no movement and being in the wind is something we don't even notice anymore.
Dutch also likes that he doesn't have to put anything up or to take down and store. Di

There are 2 different kinds of users here. We're coming out of a tent. Movement will be ok for us as weekend type campers. If I'm full timing it, I'd probably want more stability. It does depend on usage and how much money you're willing to spend.

In my 13 years of RVing, I've tried many different solutions to the jiggles. The absolute best combination that has worked for me is the tripod under the pin box, the rear crank down stabilizers AND two bottle jacks that go from the ground to the frame. The load has to come off of the suspension.

The tripod will stabilize the front jacks, the rear stabilizer jacks will take care of the overhang behind the axels and the bottle jacks will ground the frame hence eliminating the suspension.
