Pullrite superglide Lube

I have a 18K super glide and the book says to spray WD40 for lube but as we all know it is not a lube the factory said use it, BUT in Trailer life a month or so ago it mentioned using silicone which is a lube. Anybody using silicone? Or what other choice than WD 40. It is messy and I am tired of getting all over everything even though I wipe it off the hitch regularly

The first Pullright s used silicone grease on way bars. Mine used slip plate. I understand the news used wd40. I would follow instructions. Pullright is a good company and knows what they are doing.

X2, unlike other hitches, the Super Glide turns so there is no friction between the hitch plate and the capture plate. The WD 40 is not for lubercation it is to prevent rust. Other hitches are stationary, so it turns under the pin, and some lubercation is required. Another reason to get a superglide! Off subject, once a year I paint the hitch plate after cleaning it. Black with a white stripe down the center, this greatly helps me when backing in to hitch, I line the white stripe with the pin, and from 10 feet away I can easily see if I am centered!

Older version of PR SG initially required white lithium grease, then upgraded to Slip-Plate or similar graphite spray-on lube on the way tubes.

WD 40 was for the moving parts of the latching mechanism.

Newer versions have covered way tubes - which (IIRC) no longer req'd the SliP-Plate - and the WD40 may have been the recommendation for the way tubes also.

Easiest way to know for sure is either -
follow your operators manual -OR- if you don't have one, call the PullRite Tech line and ask.

Back in 04 when we got our super glide we were told white lithium grease but that was a long time ago & it makes a mess. They do not use it now, so just call & find out what they want you to use today.

Now what I have to say is get a black or what color you like Tri-Fold canvas Tonneau Cover. I know you do not have grease, but it will still keep your hitch clean. Also no one can see what is in your bed when you are not pulling. When you pull just fold up out of the way. Get one made for your size bed with rubber on the bottom so you do not have to stick any thing on top your bed. I even have a 70 gal. fuel tank in front of my hitch under my cover. but that's another story.

Tractor supply sells a graphite based paint that is similar. Once a year, I pull my tubes out of the hitch, clean them up good, then spray them with a couple fresh coats of graphite paint. If I notice that the graphite starts to wear off, I'll spray white silicone grease on the rails.

There is an old style (that I have) where the slide is metal to metal. This was lubed by messy grease until users found graphite spray worked well and did not create the mess and attract dirt like grease. Pullrite endorsed the dry graphite.

The new Pullrite has a nylon or plastic shim that slides on the way tubes. Pullrite wants these lubed with WD or other light oil. The dry graphite does not work well according to Pullrite. I believe the graphite will clump up on the plastic shim.

Slip Plate is one brand name for the spray on graphite lube. Available through Grainger and other industrial suppliers.

I would 100% follow exactly what Pullrite says. I say that from a bad experience with them. Back in 2005-06 I had a hitch like yours, used the recommended silicone. Ended up with some major galling and head seperation.

This happened to one of my good work buddies. His hitch dealer/installer told him a certain lube to use. The dealer was at fault as he didn't keep current on all the lube changes from Pullrite.
Anyhow the hitch slide part bound up and some how forced the jaws to open just as he made a right turn on to a state hiway. Result was the trailer took the tail gate off his new '08 2500 chevy and the 5er landed in the middle of the intersection.
Pullrite gave him a whole new hitch and the dealers insurance paid for the trailer repair.

As many lube changes and material changes as the Superglide has gone through I would sure use Pullrites 1-800 number and find out which lube they recommend for a specific year model hitch.

My SuperGlide was purchased in 2004. At the time lubriplate white grease was recommended. Sometime after that WD40 was recommended and at a still later date Sliplate was the lube to use. I still use white grease on the sliding parts and have never had a problem.

?? Not sure what "slip plate" is, but with the super glide hitch the contact surfaces do not move, and no "lubercant should be used". Any lubercant ing should be done down below where the hitch turns and moves, perhaps also on the jaw mechanism.

I use Slip Plate on mine ( bought from Pullrite ) on the face of my hitch. Although it does not twist and turn it makes it much smoother to back under and pull out from the trailer.

Iuse WD 40 only on my Pull Rite.. It works real well. Always apply it before each hook-up
