RV Insurance

Currently we have our fifth wheel insured under USAA but it has proven to be a bad experience. They don't have their adjusters do the inspections but use another company, Vspec to do the claims. I would rather go with a company that understands RVs.

Our issue has been that they are classifying damage from an exploded water heater as exterior leaks. Damage to cabinets from swelling and interior back wall delamination from the floor up. Trying to decide if I dispute their findings with an attorney. What a hassle and would rather deal with a company that has experience.

So here's my question. Non-fulltime est. annual insurance premium on a new fifth wheel. Since I've never owned one, I'm clueless in this department. If the TV is connected to it, does that come into play somehow? I had a $35K bass boat insured through progressive and I want to say it ran $60/month???

When we changed from Arizona to South Dakota, our trailer's insurance increased ~$300 and my truck increased ~$200 (for less coverage). Trailer was/is insured by Progressive and the Truck was formerly Farmers. Changed the truck to Progressive when we changed domicile.

My retiree medical insurance covers my needs until 65 so I don't need to worry with that.

We choose SD as our domicile state.
Easy to become resident, cheaper registration fees (vs CA), cheaper insurance (We had a Full Timers coverage ---same coverage as S&B PLUS auto coverage)

After a few years we thought of 'moving'----change of address to TX
FT Insurance coverage would have been 1 1/2 times higher ---same company/same coverages.

Agent stated FL would be higher also

SD, TX, FL were routinely used as 'domicile' states for FT RVrs.
Then Obamacare happened.
If not on Medicare/under 65 then scratch SD & TX off list.
No PPO for nation wide coverage....only within state

And we all know when you need hospitalization/medical care as a traveler it will be while you are 1000s mile away from domicile .
Is it time for your medication or mine?

We have had the total opposite experience with USAA. Have had to have 2 claims done with our trailers, and they were very efficient..

When we bought our fifth wheel, I fully expected to be "farmed" out to Progressive, but they kept us with USAA. Our boat insurance was "farmed" out, and I wasn't real happy with it..

I will reiterate, as did Old Biscuit that our 2016 Jayco 45' Seismic was deemed totaled in WVa flooding, got 5' high in our unit... ( I consider that major) , and in a little over TWO weeks had a check in hand for full purchase price... Got either daily emails and/or were called almost Dailey being kept up to date on everything going on. That unit was what we were going to fulltime in starting less than 2 months later. Also, even with that payout, my fulltimers ins is less in WV than my reg RV ins was in NC!!. I know Progressive from experience... Will stick with them for the excellent way they treated my wife and I and our situation at that time.. We had signed contract to sell our home about 2 days before flood totaled our 5er... We were clueless on how long everything would take.. Progressive was there for us during that time frame and made whole ordeal a lot less stressful.

How did the water heater 'explode' :H
Overheated or frozen???

We used National Interstate. Went thru a Ins Broker (Explorer RV)

Millers and Gilbert are same kind of companies.

National Interstate was best overall....had 2 claims during 7 yrs we used them.
Minor/major---both handled efficiently, hassle free and quickly.
Plus what I thought was Fairly!

I am a bit surprised they didn't move us to Progressive when they made that partnership; that is how our motorcycle is insured. I think I am going to investigate that because going directly through USAA for this issue has been a disaster. We are considering filing for arbitration.

I have Progressive, now as a Fulltimers. We lost our 2016 in the flood in WVa June 24th, filed a claim on the 25th, I had a claim number that day. In two weeks, they totaled out our 5er, towed it off and we had a check to pay for the one we have now. I didn't get stuck with higher rates either. Fulltimers covers my unit for full price and is insurance like you carry on your home... or regular insurance. Great rates, and the way they treated my wife and I during that time frame, I'll stick with them.

We used Progressive for auto and camper, but then switched to Liberty Mutual and got a much lower premium. Not sure exact since it's lumped in with our auto, but it's something like $300ish a year.

We have a claim going with them right now and they've been very easy to work with, with a $50 deductible. Originally the amount they gave us was about $1,000 less than the repair shop quoted, but then after talking to the repair shop, they sent us another check for the difference.
