Taking batteries out before storage.

We will be taking our 5th to a storage place for the winter. It would be helpful to remove the 2 - 12 volt batteries in the 5th before going there, than trying to go through that process while there.

Is there any reason I should not remove the batteries and then travel the 5 miles to the storage facility without batteries?

Will the Lippert hydraulic landing gear work without batteries, if hooked up to the truck through the 7 pin connector?

I know mine will operate without battery but 5th wheel must be electrically connected to truck and truck must be running.

You'll need the batteries to run Lippert's landing gear and jack's. I learned that last winter. No batteries and landing gear/jacks do not work.

Without the batteries - you will have no emergency brake on the trailer. I would take the batteries out when you get to the storage location. Put them in a cardboard box if you are worried about them leaking acid on something or moving around. This is what I used to do when I stored the RV.

Better to remove after you get unhitched in storage even if a bit more effort.

I guess you could use the emergency hand crank to lower them and get it off the truck!!

Your truck charge line will not supply enough amperage to run them

I was afraid that was the issue. Thanks to all.

Is it time for your medication or mine?

You could try disconnecting them while plugged in to your 7 wire. See if it works before you move the 5er. I also have the hyd gear and slides. I have not tried to operate just on the 7 wire. Good luck.

I used to remove the batteries when in storage.
After a while I just started disconnecting them when left for not longer than say six weeks.

Is the storage facility a long drive from home for you?

Landing gear should work plugged into your truck. However, If your trailer should come unhitched while being towed with no battery in the trailer , your trailer brakes would not come on when the breakaway cable is pulled.
