That went as expected-Part Deux

After my first failure to get the 5th wheel backed into the site. I got a friend of mine to help guide me this time and I ignored my wife(after 25 years of marriage that part is getting easier). Put the 5th wheel in position with one try. Felt real proud. Then I went to unhitch it. I cranked the landing gear up to where I thought it should come free and I went to pull the handle but it would not release. So I cranked it up higher pulling the handle every little bit but nor release. I saw the back of the truck start to lift so I lowered it slowly pulling the handle every little bit. Still wouldn't release.

When the landing gear left the ground I figured I must not have gone high enough before. Maybe the truck was just lifting from the weight coming off of it. So I cranked it back up again pulling the handle every little bit. Still no release. Then the switch stopped working. I figured I had run the battery dead. So I hooked the power cord back up to the truck to charge it. Still now power. So I took the gas tank out of the 5th wheel and went to gas station to fill it up. Came back, hooked back up the quick release and went in to start the generator so I could have power to run the landing gear. Gas sprayed all over. I found out why it is called a quick release and not a quick connect. Could never get it to stop spraying gas.

Gave up on generator and searched inside fuse panel looking for blown fuse. No blown fuse. Traced power line for a short and found an inline fuse. Drove to auto store and got new fuse. Replaced the fuse and the landing gear worked again. Went back down and back up again. Stopped where I felt it had to come loose and got in the truck. Pulled forward slight amount, no release. Backed up slight amount and it released. Pulled out from under the 5th wheel and locked it up. I figure after I recover for a week or so, I will try to hook it up to water and electricity. Can't imagine anyone doing this for a weekend trip.

I will certainly come here for advice if I know I have a question. Unfortunately, I had someone show me how to hitch and unhitch so I thought I didn't have a problem. He cranked the landing gear up and down without a problem, so didn't know I was going to have a problem with an inline fuse that he never mentioned. I have backed travel trailers for 40 plus years and the salesman said it was easier with a 5th wheel, so again, I didn't know I had a problem. The land power will be installed on the site sometime next week. The electric company refused to establish service until the Landlord installed the electric box and the Landlord wouldn't install the electric box until the trailer was sitting on the site so he could see where it needed to be installed. So battery and generator were my only options. There was no gas in the generator tank because it was a new tank. They pushed the button to show me how the generator would start if it had gas. Over the years I have filled many gas tanks with gas and started many engines, so again, I didn't know I had a problem.

If it ever stops raining here and the lot dries up a little, when the electric company finally turns on the service, I am going to hook up the electricity and water. I plan to check the voltage on the box before I hook up to it. I had a surge protector installed in line. I have plugged many travel trailers into electric boxes before and if I remember right, the male prongs go into the female receptor. So, again I don't think I will have a problem. But, if anyone wants to warn me in advance of what ridiculous problem is going to occur when I plug it in, I would appreciate it.

I have a grey water hose and a drinking water hose. I plan to hook up the grey hose to the water source that the Landlord installed and run water into the sewer for awhile before hooking up my drinking water hose to the city water connection on the 5th wheel. The water control center has diagrams that show which way the valves should be turned on my rig for city water connection. I have a water pressure regulator to put on the line. So, again, I am hoping for no problems. I realize that having never seen it hooked up to water, that I may find that the water lines don't contain the water any better than the gasoline line contained gas. So any advice would be appreciated.

Next if I can still walk, I will try my luck at turning on the propane. I have done that many times in travel trailers and homes so again not expecting any problem unless it leaks too. If it does then I may not be posting a third part to my saga. Anyone want to volunteer to help by lighting a match next to the gas line to see if it is leaking (just kidding). Again, any advice ahead of time?

I am hoping there will not be any more surprises but will share them for your entertainment in the hopes that it helps someone else. I may be learning things the hard way, but am still am not ready to agree that I am an unteachable idiot. Of course, if I am an unteachable idiot, I guess I would be the last one to know.

Ask for advise (advice) in advanse (advance) and you won't end up with a pregnant 5th wheel..:S

And - no need to ask.....
You *can* find lots of helpful "newbie" 5th wheel videos on YouTube.

Nothing wrong with being "green" - - but don't be "evergreen"!..:R

I would like to affirm the post of Allworth just above. The electrical connection is the first step of unhitching and setting up and the last stop of hitching and driving off.

If I have shore power available, I make that connection (and unplug the truck line) before I start working with the landing gear. Why tax the battery with the very heavy draw for dual landing gear motors (or even just one motor) when shore power assist through the converter is available.

First thing connected; last thing picked up (except the wheel chocks, of course.)

What seems to work for me, after backing into position I then put the truck into neutral with foot off the brake, then into park parking brake on. Lower front landing gear until weight is off, ie the truck is starting to rise up, and unhitch! Yes I put the blocks in front and back of the trailer but we are talking about unhitching. By putting the truck into neutral it takes the tension off the hitch enough so it can easily released. Good luck!

All that being said, on the brighter side of things;

You found the landing gear fuse that has confounded so many other RV folks,
You didn't drop your RV onto your truck box! (you will, BTW, eventually do this)

Well Done!

But now you know this, if you have a question or are uncertain about an RV issue, then ask it here first and you will likely find the answer. Might help in the future as we have all probably been down that road already. And as you get older, you may forget things and have to relearn them on occasion. Again, won't hurt to ask.

1. If your last motion before unhitching was to pull forward, you have to put it in reverse to move the pin tight against the front of the hitch. Otherwise it will bind the release mechanism.

2. Raise the landing gear until you just start to see a gap between the hitch plate and the pin box plate.

3. Always wait for the landing gear motor to come to a complete stop before reversing direction. Otherwise you will blow the fuse every time.

Very true. I was walked around the 5th wheel and shown where the switches were and how they worked. The guy backed the truck up to the trailer and hooked up. Then he unhooked without having moved the truck or rig and said for me to do it. I pulled forward and then backed up until it latched and he said: "That's all there is to it." My friend that helped me last night said it was like they handed me the keys to a 747 and said: "Have a nice flight."

We have all been through these type of situations. I have noticed that once things start going downhill, they always get worse! Never better.

One question: If your truck was attached to the 5th, what did you use to drive to the parts store for a fuse? With my luck I would have to walk.:)

If you're on level ground, you =always= put the truck in neutral and step off the brake, after setting the chocks on your trailer, to release the pressure on the hitch. If you've backed up a slight grade, reverse slightly and set the parking brake before you put it in park. Same thing in the opposite direction if you're backing slightly downhill.
