We Took Your Advice Ordered a Dually

Your advice and experience won over my desire to make a SRW short bed tow vehicle work. The Cedar Creek requires a dual wheel truck so we ordered a Ford crew cab long bed w/DRW including the factory installed 25K Reese hitch. There is a wide gap between the maximum SRW and DRW. If they made just one model somwhere in the gap that would work. Neither Ford or GM has one.
Thanks for your complete analysis and sound advice.

Now that we have the big problems settled Cedar Creek ordered & will take forever to get delivery. Cedar Creek say they can't find enough delivery personnel. And the TV ordered, we are looking for a bed cover.
The Retrax gets a lot of good reviews but is expensive & not leakproof.
What are your choices?
Thanks still again,
Jim

I have an 08 Dodge and it tells you on the information center when it's re-gen.

Hadn't heard of that...didn't have it on my 2010 or 2012 and nothing on the 13 either...only get a message if DPF is "full" or close to full and vehicle needs to be ran at highway speed. My 07.5 Chevy had nothing on it either stating that the truck was in "Regeneration", and again, it wasn't on the 2010 Ram, the 2012 nor the new 13'.

Just because you didn't see it, doesn't mean it didn't happen. My wife and I, both seen it on the information center. They re-gen when needed. If your not looking, while it's being done, you will never see it. We had the information center set at mpg. info. when it happened.

Pretty cool then, your 08' Dodge was way ahead of the game to actually state on the EVIC that "truck is in re-gen"...I've had trucks that re gen since middle 0f 07, 3 being Dodges, and have never seen a message stating, "truck in re-gen"...I know well enough when to look at ave. mpg and see it dropping, knowing the truck is in re-gen...I stated as much in an earlier post...Wished Dodge would have continued that with the 10', 12' and 13'...

I am glad to hear you got a Dually. My son's truck and my truck are alike except his is SRW and mine is DRW. We have pulled my 5er with both trucks.

Towing is more stable with the DRW and now he wishes he had DRW. You won't be sorry that is what you got.

Nice to hear from someone with experience with both! We are waiting on our ordered DRW to replace our 08 SRW. The 13 SRW had enough capacity for our trailer {unlike the 08}, but after loading each up with options, the DRW was only $500 more. I figured WTH, might as well go with the DRW and have plenty of room.

Congrats on your new TV.

jnharley, if your truck is a 2012 Dodge Cummins diesel with all standard emission equipment in place and working properly your truck has been thru the regen process. If you do not believe me you need to
do some research and then if you want to continue to deny that it has not been thru the regen process you need to get your head out of the sand.

Back to the question I posted, I do not recall ever hearing any signs of the truck in regen mode. How can I tell when it is happening, does it make a noise?

There is nothing that tells you that you're in re-gen, you won't "hear" anything, only sign might be the "smell" outside of the truck...the exhaust temps get hotter.....The truck will run a little hotter, (at least it did with the 07.5 Chevy I had as well as the 2010 Dodge I had...."IF" you were to use your information center and had "instant mpg" showing, you would see a drop in mpg until re-gen is done. When I looked at average mpg, I'd see that when I was cruising at 60 mph or so and see the "line" on Average miles per gallon down around 8-9 mpg, I'd know I was in a re-gen.

My 07.5 went through regen, my 2010 Dodge went through re-gen and the 2012 I had went through re-gen...all had DPF (diesel particulate filter). Those that say their truck hasn't went through a re-gen are wrong unless they've deleted that part of the emissions on the truck.

Again, you won't get a message unless your DPF is "full", then you'll be told to run at highway speed for 30-40 mins and it should be ok...I never ever got a message telling me I had a problem with the DPF, and they've been on my trucks since the middle of 07'....BUT, they all have went through re-generations....only way you might know would be to pay attention to aver or instant mpg on information center if you have one in your truck

Thanks for the help but I don't think I will ever be able to figure out when it is going on. I have a MPG gauge that only shows average MPG, there is a bar that show instant but it bounces all over the place depending if I am going up or down hill. There is a digital and regular temperature gauge, maybe I will start monitoring the Digital gauge to see if I notice and change in temps.

It is tricky, I use to figure I would have a re-gen about 1 time per tank of fuel...(every 360-400 miles...didn't matter if I had been towing, running 60 mph or cruising at highway speed at 70 mph for 3 hrs....it would still do a regen.....I got to know about when it would happen....and would keep an eye on my instaneous mpg and if I were cruising at 60 and out of no where, mpg went to pot, I'd reset my ave. mpg and watch it...I'd go from 70- mpg to, when re-gen was done, back up to 13-16 mpg. If you get out of your truck and it was in a re-gen, you could smell it seemingly being "hotter".. the exhaust gases come out hotter...again, don't know of any "alarms", sounds to denote a regen going on...just get a message "IF" your DPF is close to full, then you'll be told to run at highway speeds for at least 30 min..

And I am SO glad I ordered my 06 Dodge Cummins dually! I purposely did because I knew about all the new emissions plumbing BS, pee tanks in GM and Fords. My 06 is now 7 years old, has 67,000 miles, and the original batteries!

Considering DEF didn't come out until 2011 model year, how come you were worried about it in 2006? :h

He may have meant DPF instead of DEF...I don't think DPF came out until 07-07.5 models. I had it on my 07.5 Chevy D/A. DEF wasn't even a consideration that I'm aware of in 06'.
