What's Your Recommendation for Tires?

Our 2006 Mobile Suites currently has Goodyear LT 235/85R16 tires. Time to purchase new tires. I found:

Not to muddy the water but I'd check the psi rating of the rims before going to G pressure. Also, if it made it 8 yrs. on GY LT-Es, I would feel even better about Michelin LT-Es. The ply rating on tires is a comparison to the old 2 ply bias tires. Example - an E rating doesn't mean it actually has 10 plys but it's 5 times stronger than a 2 ply bias. That's the way it was splained to me. I also need to replace my Carlisle ST 235/85R 16s in the next year. Probably Michelin, TransForce, Duravis or some other high quality LT. Craig

Mobile suite is a heavy trailer you need the G 614.I heard that Goodyear strait theirs problem and now G 614 are very good.

I just put 4 new Goodyear 235/80/16 G614 14 ply on my trailer in Flordia total cost $1390.

Your trailer is just as heavy as mine. I'd stick with the "LT" tires as they can handle the load. Yes the "ST" tire's sidewalls can flex better in backing conditions, IMO, they do not stand up to the heavy weight and heat during the summer. When you purchase new tires, before you pay, check the date code on the tires as they may have already been sitting around for a year. (rule of thumb, after 5 years of use, you're on borrowed time with any trailer tire, great tread or not) I've had zero problems with the General Ameritrac's and Goodyear Wrangler LT's.

2. It's a 16 inch "G" rated tire according to the Owner's Manual.

Ok, I'm going to expose my ignorance now ... but if I understand correctly (which I claim to know very little), an E rated tire is 10 ply and a G rate tire is 14 ply? And the greater the # of ply then the greater the load they can carry?

The Suites forum, LOOK HERE, has a very informative section about the tires used on those 7000#/8000# axles.

I suspect your axles were derated by the vehicle manufacturer. You can find that information on the federal certification label found on the LH external forward section of your trailer. To put The LT235/85R16G tires on 8000# axles the vehicle manufacturer must derate the axles. It’s a common practice with RV trailers.

I would go with 17.5 H rated tires. I had GY G614 on my previously trailer, a 2008 HH Champagne. I had three blow outs during the time I owned that rig. After the third one GY replaced all the tires with H114. They always paid for rig repair but I was tired of going through this. With a f/w as heavy as yours do your self a favor and go with the extra safety factor of the H rated tires.

Check out Big O's for the Sailun S637s.

They didn't have them in stock at the Reno store for us last year but had them shipped in the next morning.

In 13 years of working with our guests, I've not seen tire failure problems on a 5er using Michelin, Maxxis or Hercules tires.
