Whats Your Real Weights? Truck and Trailer. The Real Deal

I donโ€™t know if itโ€™s been done before or not but I was thinking about keeping a running list of real truck weights by year and type, and trailer weights by brand, size and what the total combined weight is of each guys rig. I was hoping the info would be a help for guys wondering about what the real weights are for a certain type of truck and to keep track of the more popular brand 5th wheel trailers. Another thing that will come out of it will be to see just how many guys really know what they are towing and if they know what their weight capacities are.
Iโ€™m sure it will take some time to compile a list and it will grow as guys add there info but Iโ€™m hoping it will help the newer guys in the long run to be directed back over to this thread in the future.
Iโ€™ll keep the TV lists to mainly the big 3 and from ยพ ton and up and Iโ€™ll try to keep the 5ers in a group by real GVW, length, and then manufacture. Any ideas are welcome as long as it makes things easier. And only real information can be given, so no guessing allowed. Only guys that have scaled there rigs or are totally certain of the weights.
Letโ€™s see if I can keep the format real simple to type down and that will make it simpler for guys to refer back to and to keep track of.
Here we goโ€ฆโ€ฆ

Bigdually, thanks for the info. I noticed on the Ford web site, the tow ratings for the F-350 and F-450 show different weight limits (about 3000lbs more) when the truck is towing a fifth wheel. I tried to find similar info on the Dodge web site, but even when you chat with a Dodge rep, they won't discuss it. So if a manufacturer says their truck will tow 18,000 lbs if it's a fifth wheel and only 15,000 lbs if it's not, there must be something to it. Thanks again.

butchb,

we had a thread about that not tooo long ago. It acame to be that it is a matter of opinion, but as long as you are under GCVW, axle and tire ratings and you are comfortable with the set upthen OK. The way the weight police look at you is combined so on a scale you look like a 10k truck towing a 13k trailer but I don't know of 3/4 tons rated for 23k GCVW.

now, this morning I went and weighed my new setup,
1999 f350 2wd dually v-10 long bed 4dr auto
- truck with full fuel 5er hitch, firewood and 100lb tools........6780
- front axle......................................................3960
- rear axle.......................................................2820
- rear with pin wt................................................5500

and the trailer 2007 cardinal 362bh w/half bath, all pots, pans, linens, all gear but no food of clothing and "simulated half tank h2o"

- trailer total..................................................13320
- trailer axles..................................................10640
- trailer pin.....................................................2680

now butchb, am i a 9460lb truck towing a 10640lb trailer or am I a 6720Lb truck towing a 13320lb trailer?

because either is true but I have had many tell me that i'm a 9460lb truck towing a 13320lb trailer which ads pi wt twice???? that I don't believe.

Yes, it is VERY open for interpretation !!!

Also we are 57'9" long

First off let me apologize for being so confused here. The more I read about this the more my head spins. I am new at this so please bear with me. Yesterday at an RV show a salesman told me that the 16,000 lb fifth wheel he was selling could be towed by almost any 3/4 ton truck. His reasoning was that because the tongue weight (if that's the proper term) resting in the bed of the truck was almost 3000 lbs. He said that to calculate how much you are towing, you deduct that 3000 lbs and the "towing" weight is only 13000 lbs. I always assumed that the towing weight was the actual weight of the trailer. Is this guy right or is he blowing smoke?

Weighed my rig on our trip to FL. We were fully loaded with stuff. All water tanks empty. Full tank of fuel and 2 people in the truck.

Truck + Trailer:

Steer Axle - 4160
Drive Axle - 5660
Trailer Axle - 10140
GCVW - 19960

Truck by itself:

Steer Axle - 4150
Drive Axle - 3250
GVW - 7400

Doing the math:

Pin Weight - 2420
Trailer Loaded Weight - 12560

I'm within my limit for the GVWR on the truck (9820 vs 9900) but just barely. Glad I got the 1 ton.

I had the opportunity to weigh my rig over the holidays. We were fully loaded with more stuff than we needed for our 5 night stay at Ocean Lakes CG. The 5er had 1/3 tank of fresh water, all other tanks were empty. The truck had a full tank of fuel, DW,DD, and Mr.Wiggles (DD's weenie dog). I weighed the entire rig first.

GCVW - 21,360
Steer Axle - 4580
Drive Axle - 6220
Trailer Axle - 10560

I dropped the 5er in the yard and weighed the truck.

GVW - 8280
Steer Axle - 4600
Drive Axle - 3680

If my math is correct then -

Pin Weight - 2540
5er Loaded Weight - 13100
Tow Vehicle is at 91% of GCVWR

I gotta do this, cows were real hungry, drought here in GA, needed some hay real bad, so the truck had to earn its keep. 8 hour round trip pulling 14 round bales on 27' 10 ton trailer. Used Flying J scales.

Steering axle 4460
Drive axle 6060
Trailer axle 18,440
Total 28,960

Granted I was over the limit (wellโ€ฆOK, way over) but you know these farmers do this all the time all across the great USA.

After pulling this I believe the new Legends 37QB4S-H5 that we are getting will be no problem.

Weighted certified Interstate scale today with my 185 lb lard butt off the scale;

Manual and side plate show Max trailer weight at 12,000 lbs and GCWR at 22,000 lbs.
In the process of getting a 96 Cardinal 35 ft. with 3 slides, washer/dryer combo. Trailer plate shows GVRW at 12,000 lbs and GAWR at 6,000 lbs but have not gotten a certified weight yet as have no way to move it at this time.
My question, Is the Cardinal too much for my Chebby to tow safely? Myself, I have driven, ridden and been certified with endorcements to drive most everything that moves.

For some comparison I offer the following load and weight information on my rig and set up.

Truck-Front Axle = 5,550 lbs
Truck-Rear Drive = 4,300 lbs
Total Truck = 9,850 lbs

The above weight was with full tank of fuel in one tank (60 Gal), No receiver and One Passenger of 175 lbs.

Truck and 5th wheel combination.

Truck-Front Axle = 5,500 lbs
Truck-Rear Axle = 8,480 lbs
RV-Tipple Axle = 14,628 lbs

Total Weight = 28,608 Lbs

Above weight was with empty Potable, gray and black tanks. 80 Lbs of Propane, 32 Gal of Gas In RV Tank, Harley Factory, Wife who weighs in at 110 and fulltime living items such as food, dishes, clothes etc.. I have added a 46 Inch LCD, Yahama Sound Bar and Subwoofer in the Garage and Two Leather Lazy Boy recliners. RV is equipped with stacked washer and dryer in garage as well.

I believe I am good up to 36,000 Lbs 5th wheel total load set up.

Weighed the setup in my signature with 1/2 tank of diesel in the TV, 2/3 tank of fresh water and 1/2 tank of propane - no people in the truck. The generators were in there and we had gear for three of us for 4 nights. I was in a hurry so I only got gross weight of the whole setup and it was 17,600.

GVWR/ 11,200
F GAWR/ 4850
R GAWR/ 8250
GCWR/ 20,000

Actual weight with Driver, wife, Adult son with weight added to bed for better ride and drivability in snow..
Steer axel/ 4500
Drive Axel/ 3520
Gross weight/ 8020

So 11,200- 8020 = 3180 is this the pin weight + fifth wheel hitch weight ?
without exceeding R axel weight or GCWR.

GCWR/ 20,000-8020= 11,980
R GAWR/ 8250 - 3520 = 4730

So we have to find a fifth wheel that weights less than 11,980lbs and a pin + hitch weight of less than 3180 lbs or do I have the pin weight wrong ? Seems like we are more likely to go over on the GVWR before R GAWR.

That eliminates all units I have found so far that have cherry wood cabinets. Wow.
