Whats Your Real Weights? Truck and Trailer. The Real Deal

I donโ€™t know if itโ€™s been done before or not but I was thinking about keeping a running list of real truck weights by year and type, and trailer weights by brand, size and what the total combined weight is of each guys rig. I was hoping the info would be a help for guys wondering about what the real weights are for a certain type of truck and to keep track of the more popular brand 5th wheel trailers. Another thing that will come out of it will be to see just how many guys really know what they are towing and if they know what their weight capacities are.
Iโ€™m sure it will take some time to compile a list and it will grow as guys add there info but Iโ€™m hoping it will help the newer guys in the long run to be directed back over to this thread in the future.
Iโ€™ll keep the TV lists to mainly the big 3 and from ยพ ton and up and Iโ€™ll try to keep the 5ers in a group by real GVW, length, and then manufacture. Any ideas are welcome as long as it makes things easier. And only real information can be given, so no guessing allowed. Only guys that have scaled there rigs or are totally certain of the weights.
Letโ€™s see if I can keep the format real simple to type down and that will make it simpler for guys to refer back to and to keep track of.

well after camping this weekend figured i would run my pickup and camper across a local set of scales, a 2003 chevy 1500hd, 2004 kz durango, loaded with water, sewer tanks about quarter full, 120 quart cooler in the bed still loaded with plenty of beverages (around 80#) a load of firewood in the bed as well, the total weight with 2 adults in pickup as well, 15,980#, pickup weighs around 6400#, with just pickup on sclaes it was 8000# so around 1600# pin weight, this is the most i would want to pull with a 1500 hd, does pretty well, mileage is nothing to write home about, but it does fine, run about 20# in the airbags, could run a little less yet as the rear of the pickup was actually a little high,my truck is rated for 16,000# gross, so not much more, but this is the heaviest it will be loaded!

Just went to the scale today.....
GCVWR= 24,200. 12,200 truck 12,000 trailer
FAW=4995lbs
Truck with hitch and full tank with driver = 8,210
Trailer only=8,630
Truck with pin weight= 10,180
Truck and trailer= 16,840 lbs
Doing the math I have 23% pin weight.

(edit:) it is possible I have a higher GCVWR than stated but I am only going by the door sticker and the plate on the trailer. I didn't look up fifth wheel style towing in the manual yet.

Well truck has GVW of 52,000 & GCW of 80,000 so not worried yet, if I do ever get close I'll look you up!

As a side note all axles are well within ratings.

If the GCVWR (not GVWR) of your vehicle is 14175 then your combined weight (truck and trailer) should not exceed that. With a truck weight of 6062 your loaded trailer should weigh no more than 8113 lbs. With a normal loaded trailer of abt 1500 lbs of "stuff" added to your dry weight of 10,983 I would say your over by about 4300 lbs.

The truck can handle the hitch weight but the combined is way over.

I WOULD LOOK INTO A DUALLY FOR SURE. I HAVE BEEN AN AUTO MECHANIC FOR 50 YEARS. THE LAST 25 YEARS FOR A FORD DEALER. RETIRED 4 YEARS AGO.SO I KNOW ALLOT ABOUT THE BIG THREE TRUCKS AND THERE LIMITS. JUST FROM EXPIERANCE ALONE! I LIKE THE GMC BEST. EVAN THOUGH I WORKED FOR FORD ALL THOSE YEARS. WHEN YOU RAISE THE HOOD ON A FORD, YOU CANNOT SEE THE MOTOR. THERES IS TOO MUCH STUFF IN THE WAY. 2 TURBO'S. BUT WHEN YOU RAISE THE HOOD ON A GMC -YOU SEE A V8 DEISEL. EASY TO CLEAN AND WORK ON IF NEEDED. I KNOW ALLOT MORE ABOUT THE FORD FROM 25 YEARS OF REPAIRS. BUT I DONT WANT TO WORK ON ANYTHING ANYMORE! HA HA
THE DUALLY GIVES YOU MORE STABILITY ON THE ROAD. ESPECIALLY IN SIDEWINDS GOING THROUGH KANSAS. IF YOU GOING FULL TIMING GO FOR THE DUALLY.

MY 2008 GMC DUALLY WEIGHT IS 7,600 LBS. BUT I HAVE A 45 GAL EXTRA FUEL TANK AND A 2X2 TOOL BOX ACCROSS THE BACK. I TRY TO KEEP 10 GAL OF EXTRA FUEL ON BOARD FOR EMERGENCY'S. UNLESS I SEE A GREAT DEAL ON FUEL COST THEN I FILL HER UP. MY TRAILER IS SUPPOSED TO BE 16,000. BUT IM OVER WEIGHT A 1,000 LBS. APPROX. SO I PUT ON THE G RATED TIRES TO COVER MY EXTRA WEIGHT.
BY THE WAY I FOUND MANY G RATED TIRES AT ====NEXTAG.COM/235-85-16-14 PR-TIRES/STORES-HTML====. I BOUGHT A SET OF "KENDA G LT TIRES" A SET OF 5 FOR $850 IN OKLAHOMA. YES THEY ARE MADE IN CHINA. BUT THE WAY I UNDERSTAND IT NOW IS THEY ALL ARE.

This is a pretty light trailer but the bed slide and front storage really puts the pin weight up there for such a relatively small 5er. I'd be better off running a full tank of fresh water (58 gals) in the far back of the unit. And/or better if I got a (solidly mounted) storage box on the rear of the trailer to replace the one in the truck bed.

Hi Snowman9000,

Congratulations on your first step to safe towing by weighing all wheels. Your trailer axle weight distribution is very good; good job! I have a few thoughts for you to consider.

1. It is best to weigh your rig when it is fully loaded and all tanks are full, (i.e. fuel, fresh water if you dry dock often, propane, etc.) just as if you're on your way to camp.

2. You state that the front axle weight did not change. That could also indicate center of your 5th wheel king pin is positioned nearly over the rear axle or most likely behind the rear axle. It's best to position the king pin center 3-6 inches in front of the rear axle. By doing this, some of the weight will be shared on the front axle therefore reducing some weight off the rear axle. Also, by doing this, you may discover improved towing and handling. If the king pin position is correct, then you're correct in redistribution of some of the weight to the rear of the trailer.

3. Find the truck's GCWR to ensure your not overweight.

4. You'll find some good reading material at Fifth Wheel St. as well as a printable weight safety report.

Your numbers indicate you're marginally overweight. But you could discover it's worse once you weigh your fully loaded rig.

We had a complete wheel by wheel weighing today, with the truck and trailer loaded for travel. Weighing was done by Stacey and his wife at http://weighit.tripod.com at Casa Grande, AZ.

Truck: 2004 D/A CC SB 2WD. 400# passengers and dog. Tool box with Honda generator, some fuel and other stuff. Reese slider hitch.
Fuel was just above 1/4 full.

Trailer: 2004 Crossroads Cruiser CF28RL fiver. The kitchen cabinet sticker says it weighed 7300# dry at the factory. We had our stuff plus 1/3 full fresh & waste tanks.

Truck front l/r: 2025/2025 = 4050. GAWR 4410. Tires 3042 each.
(Truck front weighed exactly the same with and without fiver.)
Truck rear l/r no 5er: 1600/1575=3175. GAWR 6084. Tires 3042 each.
Truck total without 5er: 7225
Truck rear with 5er: 2900/2725 = 5625.
Loaded truck total 9675. GVWR 9200 (over by 475)

5er front l/r: 1750/1800 = 3550 GAWR 5200. Tires 2830 (E range Maxxis)
rear l/r: 1800/1850 = 3650
Trailer axle weight 7200
Trailer total 9650 GVWR 12395.
Pin weight 2450 25%

Total GCW 16,875 (don't have the GCWR handy)
