we are getting a TH and the service called and said the Onan 5500 EVAP is not available. (the one that runs on propane AND gas)
--EPA regs got it out of production.

our option is Onan with gas OR Onan that runs on propane.

Hmmm....I told hubby I think gas would be better. after all I have a gas tank on board the TH.

thoughts please. is one better than the other? THANKS

No problem since installing the inverter style pure sine wave diesel genset. 🙂

Rick,

Love the conversion. After being in some class A's with Onan QD gens, I've been baffled why they seem absent in the 5er/TH segment. Other than being slightly heavier, they seem to be a superior gen.

Couple questions,

- Which generator did this QD replace?
- How's the noise level compared to the LPG unit?
- What are you doing for a fuel tank?

Go with the new ONAN5500 HGJAA,,, RV QG 5500 EFI
Its gas and EFI.... the best gas gen-set available imo...

No more carb. About time.
Maintenance free fuel system, except for fuel filter replacement.
Also has an electronic governor, no more funky carb linkage from the 1950's. When tuning the EFI 5500, you set the rpm by using the off on switch in a special sequence to up or lower the rpm/voltage. Digital voltage regulation for stability as appliance loads change,SWEET. Nice set up.
The carb on the onan 5500 are the main problem everyone has.Now its gone... I Know I wouldn't miss the carb.

If you have the chance to get your genny of choice, be foolish imo to not get the new EFI ONAN 5500.

Gasoline burns dirtier but provides more BTU per gallon. LPG also does not require additives or worrying about gumming up the carburetor. I went from an 5.5KW gasoline generator in my TH to a 2.5KW LPG in my TC. Before I could fill my 40 gallon fuel tank and not worry about it. Now I am much more efficient, but carry extra LPG cylinders on long trips in addition to the 60 lbs I have on board.

Gas, Gas, Gas! Had em all and a propane gen. is a PITA, suck a 30lb. tank in no time. 30 gal. gas good for a couple days if needed for A/C, many days for bat. charging, microwave, etc. when boondocking. Propane is only good for heat (and not long if its cold) and cooking. IMO

I'm in agreement with the rest.....GAS!
You can get gas just about anywhere....not so much with LP! And you don't want to be lugging around 20# cans when you run out.

It's just easier to go with gas in terms of keeping the tank filled when your rig is a TH. I use Stabil and an occasional bottle of Seafoam to negate many of the carburation and fuel system issues that often plague gas generators with zero issues over the last six years.

From what I know propane genny's are gas hogs
