Would you purchase a used hitch? Good or bad idea?

I was thinking of purchase a used B&W 3300 hitch from a local couple for $500.00. But, maybe I should purchase a new hitch for around $1,200.00 from a local dealer and have it set up for additional $75.00 to insure proper operation. What are recommendations and or additional help. This hitch is go to set in a new 2017 Ford dually.

Not trying to be cheep and make a big mistake.

4x4ord...If you would order the complete OEM puck system from Ford Accessories, it would be different to fit the 17 frame. However, the under bed puck alignment will still be the same, on either bracket, which mounts to the frame.

The 3300 has only been available since around 2012-13, so cannot be very old.

If it isn't a 2017 I don't think it will work in a '17 Ford.

Edit: maybe an older hitch will fit - I'm only guessing that the wider frame of the 2017 Ford will require a different hitch than the 2015-16 used.

Heck yeah!! Buy it!!

I just bought a new 3300 for my 2011 Ford dually and LOVE it!!
Never towed with so much confidence!!

And the only thing that could wear out is the jaws, but an easy replacement. But I doubt the jaws are even close to worn out.

I would NEVER buy a used Reese (or even a new one for that matter). The 3300 is head and shoulders better than the Reese.

That is how I got my SuperGlide. I would do it again. Saved a bunch of money on a good hitch.

I'm looking at a used super glide now. That's how I bought my last two hitches...used!

I would buy it. Besides $1200.00 is WAY overpriced. Shop the same hitch online and see just what I mean.

My brother bought his Companion off Craigslist and has had zero issues with it. Bought the TO Ball base new, though. Biggest issue with B&W is making sure the rubber heads that the hitch sits on haven't degraded. I've seen a couple where the idio...er, owner has left the cross-piece off and the rubber has sun rotted. Not a huge expense to replace the side pieces, but would =really= affect what I'd pay for a Companion in that condition.

Does your Ford have the OEM 5th wheel prep kit? This will include the 4 puck mounting points over the frame rail and a gooseneck ball receiver in the middle.

It looks like the B&W 3300 is designed specifically for the Ford OEM 5th wheel mounting system. If that's the case I'd run to that persons house ASAP and buy the hitch immediately. It's a good hitch and will only take 15 minutes to install. There's no reason to pay a dealer $75 just to drop a hitch into the mounting locations.

I like to take my hitch out when not in use. I have a chain hoist hanging in my garage and use that lift the hitch in and out of the bed. It works really well and saves me from a lot of unnecessary back strain.

I bought a used Reese 16k hitch from dealer. Used it for a few years until we bought the new coach this year. Upgraded to a B&W 18K Patriot. Had no issues w/ Reese and sits in garage for sale.

Agree with the others. Buy it. We have the same 'used' hitch on our last two trailers. Bought it used from a dealer. Don't know how old it is or how many trailers it has been on but it works flawlessly.

If you don't tell anyone they will never know.

I will go ahead and admit it. I knew this guy who was constantly swapping out stuff. he was not interested in selling his 15K Reese and told me that if i wanted it I needed to haul it off. Whoah, that was some years ago. Like previously said, it is just iron if it has not been damaged, what is the diff?

We bought our Reese 16K twin jaw with rails and attaching hardware for $200 about eight years ago, still going strong.

ya I would buy it. I had to put a new hitch in my 2017 3500 because they told me my 16k b w patriot would not fit rails. It was a rush idea,i was towing next day after truck was delivered. I put in a 20k reese but would rather my other hitch at least I can pull it out myself. I know my hitch is in good shape had it for sale also 500
