Health Insurance Question

If my husband and I go full-time, I will need health insurance as I am not eligible for SS, and will not be for a while. My husband does already have SS benefits. Does anyone know of a reasonable insurance that I can get to cover me any where in the U.S?

Thanks for the info - didn't know that Medicaid (at least in California) could become the supplemental for Medicare. Did know that often comes into place when looking at nursing homes, etc. at end of life.

Once you turn 65 you go onto Medicare and unless something really unusual happens (like needing extensive nursing home care) you don't fall under Medicaid.

I'm not sure about Medicaid but for Medi-cal in California if you are over 65 you can be eligible if you don't make over $830 per month (or $1,138 with a share of cost) and you don't have resources over $2,000. Some assets don't count for resources such as:

โ€ขYour primary home
โ€ขOne vehicle
โ€ขHousehold goods and personal belongings
โ€ขLife-insurance policy with a face value of $1,500 per person
โ€ขPrepaid burial plan (unlimited if irrevocable or up to $1,500 if revocable) and burial plot
You can have Medicare and Medi-Cal (Medi-Medi) with Medicare being the primary payer.

I believe that Medicaid has similar resource limits depending on which state you reside in.

If things go as planned you will be able to get obama care at the first of the year. You can apply as of october 1st. We will see though.

If you are over 50 and have any kind of health problems, you will be denied coverage. Happened to me and was able to get on Obamacare PCIP before they closed it to new members.

The official site for Obamacare is www.healthcare.gov and has link to all states and their policies. Only a few states are up so far. I have big questions regarding elegibility for full-timers. Its not clear yet what happens to those without income who are not poor. Washington state says no "asset limits" for expanded Medicaid. There is no mention if no income folk can buy into Obamacare insurance plans outright. So far it seems to be reserved for working folk.

I'm no expert but the way I read the law there will be no resource requirements as long as you are below 133% of the federal poverty level to qualify for Medicaid. Above that level you would have to spend down to that level or get health insurance through the state insurance exchanges. I believe they will use your estimated income on your 2014 1040 to figure this? I also don't believe the income is just from earned income and can be from unearned income as well but I could be mistaken on this. Also once you turn 65 you would have to qualify for Medicaid the same way that you would have to today and resources would then be used as criteria whether you would qualify.

Your insurance choices are based on your state of residence. Just look for one that has national coverage.

Go to www.ehealthinsurance.com, look at the temporary 6 month policies. We have been using those for years. Choose a high deductible and the policies are very reasonable. They usually pay for 3 Dr visits during the 6 months but usually do not cover annual physicals, bloodwork, mammograms, etc. I always ask for a cash discount for the mammogram and found that you can get one for $65, my Dr has an agreement with a lab for yearly bloodwork for around $80. You have to have coverage for an emergency illness or accident. There may be a community health clinic in your area, their office visit costs are on a sliding scale. Look for dental schools for cheap dental care.

If you're military or ex-military CHAMPVA OR TRICARE/CHAMPUS is an option. Go to http://www.military.com/benefits and use the tabs in black at the top to look at your options.

I could not answer now, as it is all going to change soon.
I have private insurance myself that is very expensive and can't change because of existing conditions.
I hope it gets better.

I suggest googling health insurance and start comparing. That is what I did. There was a wide range from about $300 to $600 a month with different amounts of co-pay.
Let me just warn you. It can become mind boggling.
