2008 f53 class A v10 getting hot. You?

I have a 2008 FR Georgetown. 35' and 22k chairs. We're towing 4k of road.

Yesterday, while traveling west towards Boise the engine temp spiked to over 242f. Outside temp was 95-100f. We were traveling 65mph. I have only seen this happen once before with similar ~100f temps. The test of the trip we did lots of mountains but never saw these extreme engine temps.

When we slowed to 55 mph the temp was reasonable. If the outside temp is below 95f then we see no crazy engine temperature spikes.

Typical operating temperature is about 207f.

What have any of your seen with engine temps during hot weather? What about those of your with even bigger f53?

Overall, I'm very happy with the Ford v10.

I use the scangauge and tow in hot weather. Never have seen over 208 as that is when the fan kicks in and drops the temp back to my running temp of 190. At the 240 temp I would be worrying about the trans. The trans temp is connected to the engine and does not like temp above 210. Don't remember the numbers but at 220 and above the trans has a decreasing amount of time before damage as temp rise.

We have a 2010 Fleetwood Encounter on 2009 F53 chassis. I only have the idiot guage on the dash, but it rarely if ever moves, even in 100°+ temps, even going up demanding grades. It will move, but only a fraction of its range, it does move as normal as the engine comes up to temp.

One thing of interest is that normally the cooling fan will not engage until after we are up the grade and the transmission downshifts. As mentioned when it does engage you know it, it has a very different (and loud) sound from the engine and/or wind noise.

Yes, I use a scan gauge.

Thanks! I was thinking about adding something like that on this last trip!

RedJeep I was in Eastern OR yesterday. Pretty warm so you definitely should have heard the fan kick in. I did on several of the passes coming up from Bend.

If you're not hearing that fan, which on every F53 I've been around is very noticeable, then you want to get in asap to have it checked out. Not all RV dealerships will service the chassis of a Ford but they can direct you to a shop that can.

My gauge never really budged on the way home, even when the fan kicked in. But like you I slowed down and took it easy, most the passes on Hwy 97 had passing lanes so I just kicked back and went along with it.

Do you have an external temp device or does you're unit show actual temps not just the gauge?

The first time I heard my cooling fan it sounded like the engine was revving up in good shape but I looked at my tach and my RPMs stayed the same

I would guess that the fan not working is your problem with high temps

Actually, no, now that you mention it I don't recall hearing the fan engage.

A 50/50 mix of coolant and water with a 16 psi radiator cap will not boil until about 250F. You can buy higher pressure caps, but I would not. You did the absolute best thing by SLOWING DOWN.

There are places that will custom make radiators so you could get a bigger one, but it will be BIG $$$$ !

2008...It's 2018 now so it's 10 years old. Ever flush the cooling system, change the antifreeze and replace the hoses? I'd say it's past time if you haven't.

One of my thoughts also. 30,000 miles recommended interval. Easy to miss the note since Ford listed it in the very last pages as "Exceptions" of the Schedule Maintenance Guide. Same with the two year brake fluid flush. Doesn't hurt to change the thermostat and serpentine belt at the same time.

Next question is do you hear the engine fan kick in around 210 deg? My dog hose is sound insulated but when the fan is active it sounds like the transmission down shifted a gear.

My worst east of the Mississippi hill climbs in summer heat I've seen 214 for the cylinder head temp and 174 on the transmission as measure by a Scan Gauge.

As can be observed HERE the OE thermostat is 195F. Add 3 degrees of additional temperature rise for every LB of pressure on the radiator cap and that will be the peak operating temperature.

Interesting. Mine runs 206CHT and just a bit shy FWT, always has. Scangauge. Just how are you measuring the engine water temp?

I have seen 150 engine temp here in New Mexico and West Texas with temps over 100 so seems normal to me. I do notice that certain places that outside temp will be 10 degrees higher than the few miles before and after. This has been a very hot year where we live.
