300 HP Cummins shuts down

2006 Damon Astoria, Freightliner chassis 300 HP Cummins, with 35000 miles on it been no problem . Last month when started it. idled for about 1 min then shut down did this couple time then stared ok and drove home stopping and starting it a few time. Sat in the yard for home for a week went to start it...just shut down and it is now doing it all the time now....will not idled more then a min then shut down, can't even drive to have service. ???

Well all it was the transfer pump , and it's located hind the cpu cooling plate on the engine......

If not the filters check the oil pressure sensor. I had similar symptoms on my C7 Cat. Turned out to be a faulty sensor. You will need a technician that has the Cummins diagnostic program on the computer to tell you which sensor is faulty.

on my 300 hp cummins if i turn key on with fuel water seperator off lift pump will push fuel out .If u get fuel it is not lift pump.If fuel pressure low check engine lite should come on,al least it did on mine.

Ok found the Racor RAI-025 will get a new one..so I'll do all fuel filter first...will let all know how it goes.....

You also have a fuel strainer before the filter. It is located inside the passenger side frame rail, just in front of the rear axle. (Racor RAI-025 RAC10) It can also cause problems with fuel delivery.

The LP is the best guess but you have a number of other sensors and protection devices that can cause issues. Hope it's simple though!

You have two fuel pumps. The first "lift pump" (LP) takes fuel out of the tank and creates a low pressure supply for the high pressure fuel pump (HPFP) which is the one that supplies the injectors via the "rail".

Have a Fuel Filter Separator - FS19596 hocked to the fuel pump will check this in the am....are you all talking about lift pump... is that the same as fuel pump ??

the unit has a high pressure common rail (HPCR) fuel system

I'd change the engine fuel filter. first.

If that didn't fix it, I'd trouble shoot buy placing a temporary grounding strap from the ECM to a known good ground. If that fixes it, remove the ECM clean the mounting pads to provide a good ground.


No offence but thats not accurate. The HPFP can, depending on exactly where the lift pump fails, often draw fuel through the dead LP.
Also, the engine shuts down when the computer stops firing the electronic injectors. This is different from older models that just stopped fuel flow - which was not done at the fuel pump, but at the inj. pump.
