Dennis has it correct - so in a word IMHO .... NO. X5 In ten years I've always found a site close to where I want to be and we boondock a lot. Sure it's harder but each year it gets easier as there is more info on the net.
We are planning on three month out West and the only advance reservation we've made is for the balloon fest in Oct.
This post is my opinion (free advice). It is not intended to influence anyone's judgment nor do I advocate anyone do what I propose.

Camp sites are of various length, but they all fit all lengths of MHs:h

Unfortunately you can never get a straight answer on this topic.

Their is no way to figure out how easy or difficult it is by asking the forum.

If you always visit the CGs you fit in and ignore the others then you say you always fit every where

We traveled full-time in our 40' MH for 10 years. We got into the same parks as we did with our 33' 5th wheel. We used public parks 90% of the time as our first choice. We spent a summer in Alaska in public parks and boondocking, including in Denali Nat'l Park.

Now . . California's state parks? California is in it's own 'little' world so no, we didn't use the state parks. However, there are wonderful county, city and forest service campgrounds that we have used in California.

Yes, you need to do your research but it can be done.

To answer the question as posed......no, it's not too large for MOST campgrounds. As stated, call ahead and make sure a spot is available.

There may be a couple of State parks in Florida that 40' would not get in, but that's about it. We have been to most of the State parks and a few were tight labeled as 40' sites, but we made it in ok...

Many of the state owned parks in Oregon won't be long enough. We DID put a 36 ft MH in a 30 foot spot (it WAS big enough) at a lake. However, we lived nearby so we scoped it out the day before. ๐Ÿ™‚ I wouldn't recommend PLANNING on just dropping in to any campground in Oregon with a long rig.

I have camped in many Oregon State Parks including 7 weeks last winter on the coast.

I did a search for an arrival 4/15/15 for 2 nights in a 40 ft site and got the following results
Beverly Beach 70 site available
Bullards Beach 41 sites available
Ft Stevens 233 sites available

I agree about having reservations but a forty is no problem

LOL. Now try that search in July or Aug. I have camped California and Oregon for many years. The longer you are the more difficult it will be to find a site in the camping season. We had trouble finding a site for a 35 footer in California during Christmas break along HWY 101.

We measure out at 40' plus, and have not had any problems at all with private campgrounds. There are some State Parks in our area in which we can't fit, but not many. Oh, and we pull a towed as well. WITH the towed we're at around 54' or so.

I think it depends on how comfortable you are driving it. Gentleman I know sold his 40+ DP because it was too hard for him at the campgrounds. He then bought a 30+ foot gasser but didn't like it when he was pulling a toad. He is now onto a 30 foot super C Seneca for traveling between the north and south. He has a large 5'ver for the winter when he sits tight for awhile.

When you're on the move it's what you're most comfortable with (and can afford.)

Speaking of my home state (Colorado), I would say you may lose 20% of the state campground sites due to size. However, that number is inverse when you are talking about the federal campgrounds in the mountains. You MIGHT have access to 20% of those sites.

On average, about 48% of the sites in State Campgrounds and 52% of the sites in Federal Campgrounds are at least 40 feet.

Over 60% of Colorado State Campgrounds have 40 foot sites.

My experiences are somewhat different than the big-rig folks here. Running in a 38 foot DP for 8 years, certainly I could find somewhere to park up wherever I traveled.

But there's no doubt that there are a lot of CG's, mostly non-hookup types (state parks, etc) where my rig couldn't possibly fit -- either not into the spaces or unable to negotiate all the CG roads. Sure, there's usually someplace to stay -- but it may not be the one you want.

We went from a 36' Monaco Diplomat (actually 37') to our 40' Dutch Star (a true 40'). We never had issues with the 36' Diplomat while free lance camping around the southwest. We go to Yosemite every year at Thanksgiving and know that only about 10% of the sites are big enough, so we always had reservations. Our 40' fits into those same sites.

This year we booked Fishing Bridge at Yellowstone. They advertise their sites as three different sizes, the largest being 40' and under. This was probably the first time we had difficulty finding a site. We booked early and got the last 40' and under site in May.

So far no big issues, but I'm learning that many non campers running reservation desks or answering the phone seem to have issues when you say forty something. Lately, I've been telling them it's a 39 footer....which is true....its a 39 foot 12 inch coach! Mine has a tag axle which makes it look bigger than it is.
