We have a Class A Journey and currently tow a Jeep Wrangler 4 wheels on the ground. We are considering changing tow dinghy's to an SUV. Any suggestions as to the best car to purchase that will be simple to tow.
Thanks

We have a 2013 Honda CRV, but haven't had a baseplate installed yet since our 2006 Hummer works so well as a toad. It is heavy at 4,600 lbs, but all I have to do is push one button for 10 seconds and that disconnects the drive train. No key needed in the ignition. The baseplate consists of changing the tow rings in front with brackets. Very easy.

However, if we get tired of the Hummer, we'll install a baseplate on the Honda. It is a very nice, comfortable car.

I also like Suzukis. They are not available new in North America, but there is many units up to 2013 Grand Vitara. Only the limited(?) with neutral in transfer case is towable.

We're still satisfied with our 03 Suzuki XL-7. No fuse to disconnect, just put transfer case in neutral, trans selector in Park, turn key to accessory position unlocking steering and go.

It's been a great vehicle to tow, and while being towed, mileage isn't recorded on the odometer.

Good luck with your choice of a tow vehicle & safe travels.....

We're on our fifth tow vehicle since we started full timing, and now have the one we should have started with, a 2013 Honda CRV. 30mpg with AWD, comfortable, lots of storage, bulletproof and holds it's value better than others. Run through the gears, leave in neutral for three minutes, turn off and hit the road. With 17" wheels, it's not exactly an off-road vehicle, but it handles moderately rough, back country roads just fine.

I have been reading on the forum that there are problems with towing those cars from 2014 and newer. Have you heard of that?

Thanks

No they both tow perfectly. Jeep makes sure that they do, as it's engineered that way at the factory.

I went from a 2004 Suzuki Grand Viagra (great tow vehicle but no longer available) to a Chevy Equinox with Auto Trans. Pull a fuse, shift to neutral and go. It tows very good and just a few hundred pounds heavier than the Suzuki.

We really wanted the Jeep Cherokee but I am reading the horror stories for the newer models. It looks like the GMC Terrain is minimal issues with just removing a fuse.

FMCA just posted the 2016 towable guide, I'm sure Motorhome will post theirs shortly. I see that many 2015 towable cars are no longer towable with special preparations in 2016...bummer. We really liked our 2006 Saturn Vue, I just started towing a 2015 Ford Explorer...bigger, heavier, carries more people, and on two short trips it towed well. However, the 2016's now require that you pull the battery ground wire, I think that would mean you loose your radio settings, memory seat settings, etc.
Good Luck

I will only drive American cars since I grew up in Detroit and family worked for the auto industry. My 2008 Saturn Vue has been great as a toad with only a switch to flip for towing. The book says remove 1 fuse and that was so hard to put back I put in a switch. I just got a 2016 Equinox and they are also towable by only removing a fuse. I also looked at a Lincoln MKC and they are towable but they are about 800# heavier than the Equinox. Many Ford & GM vehicles are towable. I know my Saturn was Mexican and the Equinox is from Canada but all the profits stay here in the USA.

It sounds like you don't need a big SUV. If you want a Honda, it has to be a 2014 or older. We have owned two Honda CR-V's.... a '07 and now a '13. I really like the size and weight of the CR-V.

Now, if I were going to purchase another tow vehicle, I might consider the new small Jeep Cherokee. The small Lincoln SUV looks nice too (need to check and see if it's towable). A lot of the Ford SUV's are towable too. I will certainly miss our Honda as a tow vehicle.

I think you will have a lot of good choices once you determine the size that you want.

Good luck,
MM.

We towed an 03 Honda Element for years and thousands of miles. No problems and followed like a shadow. If they were still made and still towable, I would buy one tomorrow
