Broken Thetford toilet - replace part or entire toilet?

We have a standard Thetford toilet in our nexus 28p. The ball valve flap does not open or close when the foot pedal is depressed. It is not stuck in any way. It is out of warranty.

My question is should we just replace the parts needed or just replace the entire toilet? Entire toilet is about $175 and can be bought any time online or in store. Parts would need to be ordered and take time, but would avoid having to dismantle plumbing.

Any advice appreciated. Thank you.

One thing to consider is the height of the toilet. We replaced ours with a high profile toilet and it made it better.

I just fixed our toilet with this part from Amazon. flush ball kit

It probably took me about 30 mins and it works great now. Just research your model and see what part you need.

Glad to help. I think the original posting was in the Full Timer's Section. Just go on Amazon and search for Dometic 310 RV toilet. No headaches here. It was a very easy job to replace. The toilet also came with a sprayer which my old toilet didn't have. If you have a riser under your old toilet, you'll have to order a second sealing gasket. Other than that, It came with everything I needed. If my first post wasn't clear, I PAID $88. It was shortly after that the seller raised their price. It has now dropped back below what I paid a few weeks back.

I bought that $88 Dometic 310 on Amazon because my nasty old toilet was leaking at the valve and had a plastic bowl. The new toilet had a porcelain bowl, a much better rinsing system and was slightly taller to boot which is an advantage for us older folks. The problem is that after I ordered mine, the Amazon seller raised the price, probably due to the interest generated here, but it was till a bargain at $130. I just rechecked this morning and they now have it priced at $83! It is a great bargain as the retail price for the toilet is $208.
Thanks for posting this I could not remember the details nor could I find the post. You can't always go by price when determining value.

Someone posted a web site on here a while back about a replacement toilet for $88, I think it was a Thetford. I replaced my valve twice for about $50/valve and fixed the blade seal twice. If I new about the $88 toilet I would have just bought it instead of replacing parts.

An average, middle of the road crapper is $200. $88 will buy you a huge headache.

Replacing toilet parts is super easy. So is replacing the whole toilet. It all boils down to how much you feel like spending. If it were mine, and I otherwise liked the toilet, I'd swap out the broken parts in a heartbeat.

We used a broken valve as an excuse to replace ours with a porcelain one - Dometic 321, we are very happy with the swap out 🙂 Here's a post from our blog about it: New Toilet
Cheers!

Amazon.com has Thetford toilets & Thetford toilet parts. I used them when my valve got cracked from being frozen during winter storage. Dick

Would I have to also order Dometic parts on line? I like what was said about Dometic leaving more water in the bowl. I have replaced my Thetford bowl seal twice and it is only 2 years old. Does Dometic bowl seals hold up better?

There comes a point where you can buy parts, or just pull the pooper and upgrade. This is quite subjective. The nice thing about a complete toilet upgrade is that it is under warranty, so any subsequent breakages are covered for a period of time.

ours broke one time years back, I pulled the commode and put on old cloths and rubber gloves , and took it aprt about an hour you can rebuild the hole thing, get your kit on line and do it.
