I want to change both fuel filters in my Damon. It has a C7 330 hp cat.The water separator filter has easy access at the rear of the coach. The secondary filter is monuted upside down on top of the engine and has a sign on it that says DO NOT REMOVE, there is no primer pump.

Again for reference if folks are interested, here's an old thread of mine on irv2.com that may be useful: Relocated Fuel Filter & Added Priming Pump

Brett: Although you may be able to mount the primer pump having to open up the closet or under bed just to change a fuel filter is one big pain. There are actually some MH's where you must undo the fasteners that hold down the bed frame before undoing the floor plate! Relocating is the answer.

Yup, that is the standard location and orientation from the Caterpillar factory for the secondary fuel filter. Note the block-off plate on the upper left of the filter base where you can easily mount a Caterpillar manual primer pump.

If it is truly the sec filter you are viewing, I agree it's sounds like a good time to relocate it and add the manual priming pump. In addition to avoiding a major mess when removing the old filter this mod will make the changing the fuel filter(s) a simple and clean job. Good luck.

So that I understand this, if your secondary fuel filter is upside down, removing the filter (unless you open the drain plug on the filter base) will pour the contents out.

Said another way, looking from ABOVE, you don't see the filter base, you see the bottom of the filter. Never saw that arrangement.

Would SURE change it if it were mine.

On my C7 330hp cat there is a round canister on top of the engine but that is not a fuel filter on mine. Mine only came with one fuel filter which was the water separter and I had to have added the second fuel filter with the primer pump. Just make sure that the canister on top of your engine is really a fuel filter.

Be aware that you can relocate that Caterpillar secondary filter to any location you like. All you need is to remount it and get longer hoses. You leave it after the lift pump, as it is now, but it's physical location is up to you (or a lazy coach maker who did not relocate it.

Our current and last coach both had the same Caterpillar secondary fuel filter, but both had a manual primer pump (which is easy to add-- just replace the block off plate held by two bolts) AND it was located where it was easily serviceable from the side of the coach.

our school buses which had 3126 cat motors all had the fuel filters monuted this way, upside down.I just changed them and started motor and ran at fast idle.Never had any problems.
They also had a drain under housing filter screwed on to.

When you say updside down, do you mean the threaded portion of the filter is pointing downward? Better yet, can you post a pic something sounds pretty odd here.

Lacking any other info, it sounds like someone rotated the filter mounting base (which I don't even know is possible), but one would only ask why?
