Changing engine air filter in 2004 Dutch Star

Is there any helpful hints on replacing the engine air filter on a 2004 Dutch Star on a Spartan chassis with the 370 hp Cummin engine? Thanks ,in advance, for any helpful hints or advise as I have never tryed this before.

Yours sounds exactly as mine. However, if you have a rear closet right above the L section, there's a good chance that you have a hinged trap door in the floor of the closet. You have to feel around for it (assuming that the closet floor is carpeted). You'd never know it's there unless you really looked for it. I didn't know about mine until someone else pointed it out to me. You can also look up from your engine compartment, and you should be able to make out the door panel in the roof of the engine compartment. Mine opens up, and the air cleaner is right there. I can almost sit on the bed and change the air cleaner.

ON EDIT: Now that I think of it, I had to cut the carpet with a utility knife at the seams and the two front bolts of the trap door opening because Newmar had solid carpeted right over the entire door.

For mine, there was a door in the floor of the closet that opened and the filter unit was right there. The whole unit is replaced. I saw it done and it was not hard. I will do it myself next time.

Actually, some air filters are changed as elements only, others, as Bill points out you replace the whole filter canister.

You do know that you change the housing and filter as a unit. You do not change the element. As stated be absolutely sure you do not get dust dirt inside your air intake. I would use a vacuum to clean around the intake tube.

I think there is a recommended interval change. If not required before the recommended limit is now three years. This is to make sure the filter element does not deteriorate and end up in the turbo or engine.

The only hint that I can add is to use a vacuum cleaner to suck up any Dust that will be all over the outside of that Air Cleaner. Pay special attention to the area around the hose clamps that attach the Filter to the Intake Tubes! It is important that no dirt gets inside the tube that leads to the intake manifold.

There is no recommended service interval ,just change that sucker every second Oil Change or if the sight tube tells You to!

On mine, I have a hinged trap door in the floor of my rear closet that allows full access to the air cleaner/filter. Undo two bolts, prop open the door, undo two strap clamps and change out the filter.

Method of accessibility will vary depending upon floor plan and chassis.

On our 02 DSDP on a FTL I just raise the bed and change the air filter. I am getting older so it takes about 30 minutes, 15 if I am in a hurry. At my age I try to never get in a hurry as I forget something.
