Class C temp parking

Greetings all. We just purchased a minnie winnie and take delivery in two weeks. We live in Suffolk, VA so anyone in this area that has specific info please chime in. We were just wondering if anyone has any idea about temp street parking. We have a couple wide roads adjacent to our home and are just looking for a couple days to familiarize and setup before taking our first weekend trip.

Does anyone have any advice for newbies?

I have found that if your neighbors don't complain you will be fine. The code people don't know it's there unless someone complains.

Yeah, our rules are all over the place. So far I have managed to park overnight without issue. I leave a note in the windshield so they can call if they really want. I believe I'll do the driveway thing when needed for a quick overnight but I won't need that very often it would seem. Found a great place to store at. I can grab our little minnie on the way home from work, drive home, pick up the mrs and head for the hills. (or beach).

I am permitted to park in my driveway up to 72 hours, longer if nobody complains to neighborhood services. I am not permitted to park on the street beside my house, with any vehicle, longer than two hours, and the zone in front of my house is no parking at any time. General rule for this city is no vehicle may be parked on the street for more than 24 hours without moving. My brother lived in a city that allowed no parking 2 AM to 6 AM on any city street.

The 2 AM was pretty important, because that meant if you were having a party at the house, it had to start breaking up before your guests would have their cars towed away.

Parking ordinances are quite variable, what the rules are for someplace else are irrelevant to your situation. Find out what are your rules locally.

My town has a no RV's or trailers allowed on driveways. Seriously, it's a rediculous ordnance. You can park your 30" boat on driveway and even the street but RV's, no sir. I raised living hell with the code enforcers and they granted me an allowance to keep the rig stored on the side of my house so long as it doesn't obstruct the neighboring homes view. Now, side house parking is the code. Saves $$ from storage lots and keeps the drive way open. We were greteful the town was willing to work with us and with the other RV owners. Apparently the no driveway thing was unenforced for years until someone made a complaint a few blocks away over an RV obstructing their view while backing out of their driveway.

Apperentley we are not allowed to have any trailers over 8x12 on our property or non op vehicles. We dont have Hoa but this is what code enforcement said at the neighborhood meeting. I keep my TH on my property and my neighbor has a 64 ford non op covered up in his drive way, we are friendly neighbors and no complaints from anybody. I think the rules are ridiculous, how can someone have any toys if your not allowed to keep anything on your property. The number one complaint in our area is basketball courts in the street. Lame! Be a friendly neighbor and you will be good.

They certainly don't seem as strict as Norfolk or Virginia Beach here. I have storage for it between my office and home and I think parking it on the street or in the driveway overnight will work out. So far no nasty notes from neighbors. ๐Ÿ™‚

For the heck of it I Googled "Suffolk, VA Vehicle storage ordinance". The only two things that came up were "Vehicles parked on grass" & abandoned/inoperable vehicles". Nothing about RV storage on private property.

You might go back to the city and see if you can read through the code, or try and look it up on-line.

That was a thought however, our local Walmart is one of the few that do not allow RV parking.

If there's a 24 hour Walmart nearby, park it in the back of the parking lot for a couple of days and you can buy stuff you need for your trip while you're there. Just be sure that its open 24 hours, so there's traffic and potential witnesses.

We managed just fine. Left it overnight and left the next afternoon without a complaint. We did find that it will fit fine in the driveway without disrupting the neighbors as well. We survived our first weekend getaway in our new wheeled home and already looking forward to the next one or two or three in the coming months.

I don't think you will have a problem with a short stay - talking to neighbors will further mitigate possible problem.

Sounds like sound advice from you guys. I can't find anything clear and we really only want a couple days. It's brand new off the lot and we would like to check it out when it arrives, load what we would like into it etc and then take it out someplace fun on Friday. I have a storage location I intend to lease for it but don't want to drive 90 miles from the dealer and immediately dump it there. I would be a very sad camper.

Thanks all. I'll just do it and ask for forgiveness and not let it happen again ๐Ÿ˜‰

Not local to you or even in VA when this happened, but when I was moving into our MH I parked it in front of the house for a week before I got a notice to have it moved within 14 days. ๐Ÿ™‚ that was awesome, cause then I knew I had at least that long more before I would get fined and I only needed about 12 of those 14 days.
Suffolk is a little more rural of a town compared to the rest of Hampton Roads so they may not have an issue with it.
