EZ Pass in rental car?

We have the I Pass (EZ Pass) from IL, the transponder is easily moved from mh to toad - and both are registered. I need to rent a car for a family event - can I use my transponder in the rental? Of course, there are toll roads to our destination 🙂 thanks, Kathy

I have an I Pass and they said if using the MH to move the transponder to the MH and it would count the car also. Very simple. It is also registered to my daughter's car.

I have PA EZPass and have all cars registered under it.

All you have to do is go online to your account and add the plate number. When you are done take the plate number off the account.

Not my experience. I rented in Denver, EZ pass already in, no charge, except for the toll, of course. How else can you pay? There's no tool booth.

which is why I wrote "most". i rented a car in florida last December and the charge to include a toll transponder was enormous compared to just paying cash.

Things are always a little different from state to state - this is what MA says:
Can I add a rental vehicle to my account?
If you are planning on using a rental vehicle you should add it to your account prior to using the rental vehicle. You can update your account on-line or call customer service. The rental vehicle should be removed from your account 48 hrs after you have returned the rental vehicle. It is recommended that you check with the rental agency about their policy for using your transponder in their vehicle.

May I use / move my transponder from one vehicle to another vehicle?
Yes, the transponder may be used in another vehicle provided both of the following conditions are met:
All vehicle license plate numbers in which you intend to use your transponder must be listed on your account.
All vehicles which you use your transponder must be of the same class. For example, if you registered your transponder with a 2-axle, 4 tire vehicle with non-commercial license plates, you may only use that transponder with other 2-axle, 4 tire vehicles with non-commercial license plates listed on your account.
NOTE: Commercial license plates, including dealer plates, are not permitted on individual accounts.

on my Delaware ezpass I had to register two vehicles to the one transponder.

EZ Pass doesn't care what vehicle it's in. The toll booth counts the axles and charges your account appropriately.

I've used the same transponder in my old diesel dually, sometimes towing a 5th wheel, then moved that to my S10 Blazer, then to a Chevy Silverado, which sometimes towed a 5th wheel, and most recently used it in both a rental car, then a budget truck towing a car trailer behind it from Mass down to Florida.

Just use it...it works, period.

Can I user between cars?

Yes, you may transfer a tag between vehicles as long as they are of the same vehicle class. There are penalties for using a tag in a different vehicle class (i.e. Car tag in a tractor-trailer

I CANNOT use between my car & motorhome.

That easy pass is registered to ONE car. I don't think you can use it between different cars. Might want to check with the EasyPass people, NOT the retal car people.

I think you are correct. Our son had an accident that totaled his car. I got a rental car for him and took it to the site where the car was towed. He called EZ-Pass on his cell phone and had the transponder transferred to the rental car for a few days.

not so in Illinois. the Illinois version is called iPass and can be registered to several different vehicles. we have two transponders and three vehicles. each of our transponders is registered to all three vehicles.

I'd ask the rental agency.

It seems likely the rental car would already have one.

most rental agencies will be happy to supply one...at a hugely inflated price. if the OP already has a transponder i'd absolutely use it.

In NY I need 2 EZ passes, 1 for the RV and one for the car. The RV EZ pass is for a truck with duel rear wheels and the one for the toad is a regular EZ pass. I keep the toad pass in the holder when towing so it does not register, the toll gate picks up the number of axels.
