Floor Plan Pet Peeves

MilesandSmiles

As my wife and I are looking at multiple Class A DPs, we've found so many floor plans that would be great, "If only...." Our two top pet peeves:

1) Can't watch the TV from the couch. Really? Do they really think I want to sit down after a long day, pick up a glass of my favorite beverage, and watch TV from the dinette?

2) No shelf beside the bed. Are there really that many people who don't need a place to put your glasses, hearing aids, CPAP machine, or that great book you've been reading just before you turn out the lights? Where do they expect us to put those things?

Can you add to the list? What are the floor plan features that have made you think, "What were they thinking?"

if you want it behind a closed door, so you can't see it when walking to the bedroom, that is your choice
nobody is going to see you when you use it, not even the DW sleeping in bed
any home i ever lived in the toilet was visible when you went into the bathroom

AND i don't call that sitting in the hall

you don't like walk thru bathrooms..
okay ..personal preference

OK, you can call it whatever you want (hallway or walk through bath). The toilet is still out in the open. The OP just asked what my pet peeve was and I didn't mean for it to be an argument. I don't mind the shower and lavatory in that area. I just prefer a door for my commode so people can still move about without the hi honey as they pass-by. To me, my m/h is kinda like my second house. I wouldn't have a "walk through bath" to get to my bedroom in my s&b home either. I doubt most people would.

To each their own.

I haven't seen a class A, RV that didn't have bathroom doors
Even Camper vans with porta potties have a curtain or folding door

Me either but I don't want my commode sitting in the hallway. Doors, I don't mind. In fact I think you're right. They all have a door somewhere that gives privacy from the living area or bedroom area. Surely you've seen those that have a toilet sitting open in the hallway.

I'm not sure what you mean by open in the hallway
We have a walk thru bath, doors slightly off center
Closets and drawers on passenger side , toilet is back to back with kitchen wall, and can not be seen unless you walk into the bath
It is not in the hall, you do not walk around it
A walk thru bath provides more room than a split bath, when showering
And changing clothes, Not much room in the bedroom for dressing etc..

HEREis a perfect example of what I'm talking about with the toilet sitting in the hallway.

I've passes up even looking at this style on at lease a dozen different occasions.

The TV location was important to us. We like it above the driver area. Since ours swings down from the ceiling, we had a 55 inch TV installed so it's like a small theater!

Our dinette is on the drivers side and is what you call a 'J-booth'. So, we can eat dinner and watch the TV easily. We also like to either lay down on the sofas or prop our feet up on the ottomans. This set up works well for us but not for everybody.

lostdog and barmcd,

Not giving you heat, but for us, that was the perfect arrangement. When you lean back on the sofas, viewing the TV is perfectly natural. We have four kids with us and our dual sofa layout gave us the sleeping space we need, plus plenty of indoor seating space to watch movies on rainy nights. No problem seeing the TV from the couches or the dinette. Even from the rear facing dinette you can see the reflection of the TV in the mirror. If there were just two of us, then maybe a different arrangement would work, but we needed the sleeping and living space. We also have (almost) plenty of closet space as we have closets where a lot of the new rigs put bunks. That, in my opinion, wouldn't be my choice as I don't want the kids a paper-thin wall away from the mommy-daddy sleeping space. Much better to have them all up front.

I've seen a number of rigs with the TV in the middle, but for many of them, any time anyone gets up, they walk in front of the viewing area. In some cases, anyone working in the kitchen area would constantly be in the way of those watching TV. Again, maybe not too bad with a couple, but with a larger family, not a good solution.

We also have shelves on either side of our queen bed.

Our floorplan is what sold us on our rig. The dual sofa layout is rare in a gas motorhome and ours was being phased out when we bought it in 2004. Might've gotten the last GBM with that floorplan for all we know.

I'll probably take a lot of heat for this but we could never understand the logic of having two opposing couches and the TV over the windshield. Who wants to turn their head 90 degrees to watch a little tube? We wouldn't buy a diesel because most of them had this arrangement, though the trend now is finally away from that. We have a gasser with a perfect floor plan for us and we fulltime!

You need to just look at larger coaches. I've seen plenty with viewing from the sofa and shelves in the bedroom.

You're not making sense here. First you say that "they all have a door somewhere that gives privacy"....then you say "Surely you've seen those that have a toilet sitting open in the hallway".

Which is it???? Do you mean "sitting open" that the door is open?

I'm confused.:h

Here are the things I would like:

> Couch and dinette on the passengers side.

> Set up so you can watch TV from the couch & recliner

> An outside door that leads to the toilet. No need to track in the outdoors when you want to use the toilet. Also would work well as a fire exit door for the rear of the coach.

> I don't care for a big slide on the passenger side of the coach. It reduces the area you have under your awning and makes it harder to get into the storage bins. If the storage bines move with the slide then you loose pass through storage space.

> Outdoor lights, want more. My current RV has 1 small amber light near the entry door. i would like a few more white lights. 2 on each side and 1 in the rear. this would help when setting up at night and also when a road side repair is required.

> An onboard compressor. How nice would it be to be able to fill tires, float and other items simply by plugging in an air hose? I had a car once (93 Bonneville SSeI) that had a build in compressor & accessories. It was a great little feature.

> Sun shades that WORK!! I have like about 1200 square inches of window/windshield space in the drivers area and a sun shade that covers about 300 square inches. And guess what...... the 300 it covers never seems to be where the sun is.

> A drivers side seat that actually swivels all the way around so it can be used while camping.

> No Rugs!!!!! I don't want them.

> All of my fuses in one location. I have 4 different locations (that I know of). Most of them are not easy to get to.

In a class A, we do not like the TV in the front. We much prefer a TV in the middle of the coach. You can see it from the side chair. Both driver and passenger chairs can be rotated to watch. You can see it laying down on the sofa. And one side of the dinette faces the TV.

Lack of storage. Or, poorly designed storage is a pet peeve. Both inside and out.

I have been inside many, many motorhomes and only once did I see a toilet that was not behind it's own door.

It was a custom coach that apparently was 'not' delivered to a customer. The bathroom was in the middle of the coach like you see on most. The toilet was pretty obvious if the bathroom door was open. So, the only way to get privacy was to close the door between the kitchen and bathroom and the door between the bathroom and bedroom.

If your partner, kids, or other people were in the bedroom, they would be stuck until the bathroom person was done. Crazy design. And this was an expensive coach that a lacked a lot of thought.
