Fueling at truck stops

My wife and I will be trading in our TT for a Class A gas MH in a few days. We just joined Good Sams club and now look forward to a little discount on fuel. I'm wondering if the truck lanes at Pilot and other truck stops offer gas as well as diesel? I would be a little embarrassed to pull up and only diesel only pumps were available.

I've been cruising this forum for a few weeks and have learned a lot.

Pilot/Flying J also has an app for your smart phone. It provides you a preview of what is offered at each station. Works great. Just go to the phone's app store, search and download.

Before Pilot bought FlyJ 5-6 years ago their prices were OK but today their prices can be 15 cents higher than a couple of blocks further from the Interstate. GasBuddy saved me almost $400 this past summer on a 7000 mile trip. It helps to have a 120 gallon tank so you can go 700+ miles before needing fuel. Before the trip I went to GAssBuddy.com to see areas of the country that have less expensive fuel helping to decide where to fuel up. WalMart/Sams often have the best price but some can be a little hard getting in/out and not all have diesel and if they do it's usually only on the outside pumps.

Fuel was just added to our WalMart and every pump has diesel and even none ethanol gas... three different hoses.

Go to Barnes & Noble and buy Next Exit book, similar to phone book but has all RV friendly stations in red ink, We use that and as we find stations we prefer we put a asterik by it in the book, haven't got caught off guard yet but I look station over anyway before I make the turn in, I have actually pulled over to look over the tanks position-We prefer tanks being parralell with road-Rich

For the original Flying J question you will also want to download the Pilot/Flying J app on your smart phone. You can set your travels and find all locations along the way allowing to to compare pricing and amenities at each station.

Ideally you should start a new topic here but...

You pull in.
Many require you to go inside to get the pump started, this is where a Flying J RV card helps.
Pump your fuel.
Pull forward.
Go inside and pay.

May I tag onto this: just joined the diesel world. What is the protocol for using the truck pumps? I know it is get in and out of the way of folks trying to make a living quick. Any practical advice?

That is true plus many fueling stations are easily accessible if you stick with the outside islands. As mentioned, look things over and you will find plenty of places that you can get in to and out of without any hassle. The trick is NOT to wait until your tank is almost empty and your choices are limited. When you get down to a 1/4 tank, don't pass up any station that has easy access. We frequently find lower fuel prices away from the interstate truck stops, even with the Flying-J discount.

I use " Allstays" App. It's an awesome app that you can lookup stops. Used it on this last trip to Virginia & back to find the Flying J's with RV lanes. Seemed like those stops also had propane & dump stations.
In the past I've always used the truck lanes because of trailer, but found these stops to have lots of room & good layout to get 63 feet of rig & trailer through. I really like the RV lanes much better & will keep using them in the future.

We download the Pilot/Flying J list of all the locations that have RV amenities. It's in an Excel worksheet formula so you can sort it, use filters, etc. and create your own list that's specifi to your trip.

I think you'll find that a MH is a lot easier than a trailer to get in and out of gas stations. Still takes some recon and planning ahead but much easier in my opinion, although a toad may limit backing.

As said, no gas at the truck islands, just diesel. We've always been able to gas up either at the Flying J (and some Pilot) RV pumps or the regular car pumps in other locations. The trick is to always plan your exit before passing the "point of no return" when entering a station.

Only diesel at the truck pumps. Gas is at the front station.

Only diesel that I'm awarte of. Flying J has RV lanes that offer gas and diesel.
