Gas mileage for 1991 Coachmen Royal 460 motor

thinking about purchasing a 1991 coachmen royal 36'
with a 460 motor. does anyone have any idea what gas mileage might be for this?

1991 34 foot Bounder Ford 460 6 miles a gallon. Could never get more. Engine was going bad at 75000 miles in 2000. Bought a diesel then. Now 120000 + and 8 to 8.8 MPG and still going strong.

FWIW, the most efficient that 460 will run is at 2400 rpm's. For me that was about 62 mph depending on conditions. Set the cruise for 2400 rpm's and that 460 would purr all day.

Just like a prior poster noted, wind made the most difference for me. A 30mph headwind and I could watch the gas gauge moving. I learnt long ago to just kick back, and spend another day in the park since the money I spent on camping was less than what I threw out the window in MPG. One of the perks of being retired 🙂 or maybe it's really just the necessity of having a fixed income :(.

Best advice on this thread is not to worry about it. Figure out how much money you're willing to spend and that will tell you how far you can go.

I have a 1990 36' with 460.
On a good day with a tail wind 9mpg
on a bad day with a head wind 5mpg
so I average about 7 mpg overall.
Note:
I try to keep it between 60 and 65 mpg.

I have a 1997 460, 37 foot RV and on my last trip (without towing a car) I was trying to keep up with a relative on our way to a campground. I ended up going over 70 mph for the whole trip (about an hour). I drove normal on the way back (around 60 mph). When I calculated my mpg it was about 5.7 mpg. This is with a tuned up 460 and the full Banks system. I was a little unhappy with that mileage at first, but then remembered that I was going over 70 mph for the first part of the trip. I've noticed that speed and hills REALLY drop your mileage.

I've since stopped calculating the mpg. It really does not mean any thing since I will still take the RV on trips whether it gets 5.7 mpg or 7.5 mpg. I would rather just enjoy the RV experience with my family and not worry about it.

There are too many variables to effect gas mileage--terrain, wind,
towing. If gas mileage is your only concern on a unit that old,
I would say "don't buy it".

I've owned three different motorhomes. Two gas and one diesel. One 460 Ford, one 454 Chevy and one ISC 350 Cummins.

Having checked mileage intermittently I can say that the average for every one was between 6 and 8 miles per gallon. Obviously there were times I saw higher and times I saw lower, but over the long haul I expect about 7.5 as the most consistent result over about 25 years.

BTW, I estimated this based on our Canadian gallon...alaways gives 20% more miles :B

I only took mine once. It was on flat land, towing a Saturn, with a 30mph tailwind going about 62mph - 10mpg. That was good enough for me.

I have a 97 Ford with a 460 and the same 4 speed automatic, 5.12:1 rear axle ratio, and 30' long with a 17,000 GVWR. I get about 7 MPG while using 87 octane gas and going 62 - 65 MPH towing my car. While taking my time, towing and using 92 octane gas, driving 55 MPH, I was getting up to 8.8 MPG.

On a coach that old depends on the tune of the motor too. I'd say 5 or 6 MPG in real world conditions.

Cruising easy on flat highway at 55-60 mph you should get 7 mpg. Pulling hills can drop down as low as 5.
Probably not what you want to hear but even the newer gas coaches of that size don't do too much better.
If you want good mileage buy a Prius.
