We use the Rand MC Nutty now but have the Garmin for a backup. The programing must be done in china and using old Maps from the 1700s up through 1945.
Even updated every little bit they both leave out sections of Interstate and other roads built in the 70s forward. Old cow paths, Indian Fiords, I kid you not, Stage coach road, and goat paths.
Invariably they direct you through some towns and to places to eat that have all been out of business many years. The new chains may be on the Rand but we haven't looked.
One of my favorites was two years ago being directed to make a u turn and go back about ten miles, turn right and many goat paths back out on the same road we were originally on two miles down the road.
Then there was the directions to turn right along a big crosswalk and into Lake Michigan and back along the shore underwater.

We like the Garmin RV 760. Nice bug bright screen. We use the bean bag mount so we can place it anywhere on the dash. As with any GPS, we also check the route ourselves and know where we are going. But it is great - we do not like to travel without it in the RV or the car.

Quote: I just purchased a Garmin 760 LMT and like it so far. It's programmable for roads and rig set up. I had a Garmin 7200 Street Pilot for years and loved that thing. But new maps are no longer supported so I went with the 760. Better graphics and voice commands than the 7200 plus it's voice activated and has a 7" display. Got mine on Amazon using my Visa reward points so no cost to me.

Thanks. That one sounds pretty good. I'll check it out.

I use my Android phone in the car,, Though there is now a movement to make that impossible.

In the RV I use Microsoft Streets & Trips, one of several such programs, not the best but I was already trained on this one (And Rand McNally) from work, so I use it. Other competing prorams include Co-Pilot Live which is designed for drivers of LARGE vehicles (SEMI Trucks) and may be better suited to RVing need.

S&T does have one RV feature.. Woodall's Campground guide built in.

I got the 2013 version with Dongle (GPS) and love it, way better than older versions and lower cost too. sixty seven bucks, not counting laptop.
Home was where I park it. but alas the.

after a semi "nicked" it. Still have the radios

The people who write the programs for the GPS are not going out to every street and looking at them to see what's suitable for trucks and what isn't. They are looking at laws and designated trucks routes and things of that nature. Even though a road may be narrow, if it's legal for a big rig to operated on it then the GPS may very well route you down it.

I should have phrased my question differently. What I should have said is...Is there a really good GPS that has an option to show only designated truck routes? The Magellan that I have had for a few years does not give this option.

Just bought Garmin RV 760 LMT from The GPSStore.com. Looks good. input two large sets of custom POI's with POI loader and that worked fine. Set up multiple routes for next trip. After a short learning seems to be intuitive.

There are various brands of truck and RV units but none of them will be perfect.

Besides what's right for you is not for someone else...just saying.

RV specific?

Garmin, Rand (Good-Sam) and TomTom all make RV specific ones.

The early Rand (7710) had lots of issues, but I doubt any are still available
The Rand (Good Sam) come with a Good-Sam campground directory built in. I don't know what "brand" of campground directory come with the other two.

Personally I like Garmin over the other brands, Amazon has the best price on the RV-760 I've seen.

When someone tells you to buy the same rig they own, listen, they might be right. When they tell you to buy a different rig then they own, really pay attention, they probably know something you don't.
