How do you prevent "refrigerator fallout"?

In our refrigerator, we put a mini curtain rod a few inches above the bottom shelf that keeps food from spilling out whenever we open the refrigerator door.

We tried a mini curtain rod on the top shelf, but to place the rod in an efficient position, one end has to be on top of the refrigerator light box. The pressure of the curtain rod on the box keeps the light on-off switch from working.

What would work on the top shelf to keep food from spilling out? I'd rather not use a solid plastic bin because that keeps the air from circulating.

I use clean, folded bath towels in front of each shelf. I also use them in front of my dishes and in the "medicine" cabinets to prevent shifting while traveling.Works great!

Suction bungee cords for refrigerator. A nice idea but they're $13 plus shipping for two cords. ๐Ÿ˜ž

With our off the shelf refrigerator I have to bungee the door closed. When I open it I put out one hand to catch whatever is going to fall and stuff it back in.

We use the shower curtain type bars and try to place stuff that is round in the door storage. Sometimes, stuff is just going to fall out. Once, DW put an open soda can on shelf with intent to finish it before we left. She forgot and it decide to tilt against the door all on its on accord. When we opened door at home, it could do nothing but fall. Big mess but luckily it was diet so no icky, sticky sugar mess.

Plastic containers work great....easier to pull out a plastic container then trying to see what's in back of the frig.

Or in our case, perhaps a better driver with more attention to pot holes ๐Ÿ™‚

I use three or four little plastic baskets of various size and shape to hold loose packages, canned drinks, etc. Find them at walmart or dollar stores for cheap ones.

We try to pack all of the shelves full, with bread or food in soft plastic tubs at the front of each shelf that helps to keep items from shifting during travel. We also place heavier items in glass at the rear of each shelf or in door shelves/bins.

We don't seem to need adjustable rods. I have also seen elastic cords with suction cups that serve the same purpose as the rods that might work.
