How many of us are there? Owners of Dodge based RV's?

I'm new here, and curious.

How many of us in Class C own Dodge B300 incomplete
cab/chassis based RV's? I know two others- Steve aka
Ripsaw, with a 1977 Brougham, and Leroy aka 1978_Dodge
_Delta who owns a 440V8 powered sharp looking 1978
Delta RV. I would like to ask, and offer, help, idea
swapping and comparing notes on our particular RV's
which are based on the Dodge B300 van chassis.

Yeah, I know. These are low tech, podgy old RV's that
would be considered "entry level" for folks like me,
but I have a deep and abiding respect for the quality
of these old "monsters of the open road". And anyone
wanting to pick brains, joke about, share notes or just
brag about our old A- Dodge-io's are certainly welcome
to PM or email me. Between all of us we can form a real
good support group, and help each other with problems
we know we'll encounter with an older vehicle.

Sure. I'd love a new RV. But I'd rather have an older
one already paid for, and a lotta great memories. Call
me frugal, an old hippie, or whatever you will. I'm proud
of my old land yacht.

Mopar Madness Manifest in the flesh,

Mark aka White Knight

P.S. Mine's a '72. Is there an older one out there someone's
motorvating in? Maybe even a Travco? W/K

Nice looking Tioga, Tioga76. My brother lives in Englewood. I plan on making a run out to see him in my old dodge one of these days and do some camping along the way. Lots of great camping out here in the mountain west.
I don't think anyones dying statement ever contained the words "I wish I had spent more time in the office", so lets go somewhere!

I had forgotten to check the timing, I'll check it tomorrow. What should it be? I'll be sure to listen for any pinging too.

Tioga76, nice looking MH. How does that thing do climing the grades out there in Colorado with the 360? I have a similiar size MH, and the wife wants to visit her friend in Idaho this summer. So it would be a long run from MI to Idaho Falls. We are trying to decide weather or not to tow the Jeep with us. I am not to sure of the power to climb the hills out there though.

Hi everyone! I have been reading this thread for awhile and finally decided to write in. I have enjoyed looking at everyone's rigs and reading the wealth of information that is here! I have a 76 Tioga 23' Class C with the 360. It has about 88K miles, and still has all the original appliances in working order. I've had it about 3 years now, and aside from some minor maintenance it has been very reliable and I have enjoyed camping in it. Here are some pictures!

Champion Copper / Spark Plug Part Number: #406 or RV12YC

This is what I picked up and installed today. The parts store didn't have any RV9YCs, and the guy said he hadn't seen that cold of a plug in a while. He was familiar with the confusing situation, and found the RV12YC listed for use in all motorhome 440s. I figure the previous owner had changed to a colder heat range for some reason. I'll pull them and check them after some miles to see how they look. So our rig now has a new cap, rotor, and plugs and it runs great. Now just to see if it will pass smog.

Pinging (pre-ignition/detonation) would be one reason for going to a colder plug. Basically, the sparkplug tip gets hot enough to ignite the fuel/air mixture before the distributor fires that plug ... make sure the timing is on the mark. (Yes, I've seen people install colder plugs to deal with timing that was off ... they should have fixed the problem, not the symptoms.)

FrugalFreak,

RE Spark plugs

I have a 78 Dodge chassis (w/ a Fleetwood Jamboree). My 440 had Mighty R42 plugs in it when I got it. When I looked for the equivalents, they were Autolite resistor 85. I also just now looked up the plugs using Autolite's lookup by vehicle system and it also came up with 85s. I used these criteria:

Copper resistor spark plugs
Vehicle type: Passenger/Light Truck
Year: 1978
Make: Dodge Truck
Model: 400
Engine V8-440CID 4 bbl. (D)

Both 1978 and 1979 show the same plugs. Perhaps I have not used the correct criteria?

I have the 85s in mine now and they seem to be working fine.

Here are some pics of the interior from when we first got it. It's a mess, at this point all we had done is install new blinds. I'll post some more later, we've now installed new carpet.

Yep... that is almost identical to my floor plan. I like your barrel chairs, the fridge/freezer combo, and the accordion divider for the bunk area. I've been keeping my eye out for a larger fridge for mine and trying to figure out the beat way to add a divider to mine.

Nice rig... I obviously like the floor plan. ๐Ÿ™‚

Still remodeling mine. But I use it too much to make a lot of progress. I'm hoping to go with vinyl allure flooring and some little throw rugs instead of carpeting in mine.

As I posted earlier, my Dodge Motor Home Chassis parts book lists BL-9Y as the correct plug for 69-75 440-3 engines.

I did find this elsewhere on the 'net:

I have a 1977 Dodge Journey motorhome with a 440-3 engine. My owner's manual lists the RBL9Y as the proper plug for this engine. Unfortunately, many auto places no longer carry this plug. Many do not even have a listing in their books. The champion RV12YC is an equivalent plug that can be used. I've used it in my motorhome for the last 15 years. I'm very happy with the performance and upon replacement I notice the colour of the plug is within the proper specifications.

second post:
I found a booklet with these specifications for the 1977 440-3 motor...

Spark Plug Gap and Number: .035" (0.9mm)
Champion: BL9Y
Resistor Type: RBL9Y

So it looks like RV12YC is the modern equivalent to the BL-9Y.

I figured that a build date of 12-78 would be a '79 model year (didn't the model years usually change around Sep?), especially since it has the 4 headlights. Maybe the chassis is a '79, and the engine is a '78. But according to the Champion apps list I've seen, the RJ12YCs are for a '78. But they are so different than what was in there. I'm inclined to just go get some new RV9YCs, but I'd like to get to the bottom of the application questions. When did the 440-3 cease production? Isn't '79 one of the last years? Where do I find identifying numbers on the engine and/or heads?

doing research on web, these are the numbers I found,

440 All years use
Champion Copper / Spark Plug Part Number: #406 or RV12YC
Autolite-Platinum / Spark Plug Part Number: AP25
Motorcraft / Spark Plug Part Number: 450
Ac-Delco-Rapidfire / Spark Plug Part Number: 1
Autolite-Double-Plat / Spark Plug Part Number: APP25
Ac-Delco / Spark Plug Part Number: R42TS
Bosch-Copper-Super+ / Spark Plug Part Number: 7969
Autolite-Resistor / Spark Plug Part Number: 25
Motorcraft / Spark Plug Part Number: SP-450
413/361 all years use Champion part # 405
Found recommendation for RV12YC here. the other numbers are other manufacturers equivalency to the #406.

a Post from somewhere-
While this information is located on the first page of the Dodge Parts Book, I suspect it gets missed.  Because of the
coding used in the Dodge MH Parts maual, it can be confusing at times to determine which part number you need. You not only need the year model, you need the chassis key code from the first page of the parts manual.  Dodge did things like referring to the M375 chassis as M4 (If you look at the brake overhaul pictures they refer to a 72 M400; it's actually a M375).
The following table is a condensed version of the key code information.

_______________________________________________________________
new engine mounting brackets depending on the engine you choose. Both 318s and 360s use Dodge PN 3894712 for the right side
(440s use PN 3823214), but the left side mount is different for all three engines:
PN 4112853 for 3l8s, PN 3497409 for 360s, and PN 3823215 for 440s. The rubber insulators are the same for all
'72-'92 trucks, (except those with 3.9L V-6) PN 4088033 for both sides.

some parts numbers I've gathered from other forums people discussing 440's and Dodge RVs.

Can anyone confirm that above info is correct?

Eye, I can't comment on how mine was with the R-12 as the system was empty when I bought it. I went to my dad's shop to charge the system and what was left of the R-12 was not enough to charge it. So I did the convert. When is was 80 degrees out, after getting the house part cooled down with the roof air, the cab air kept the front ice cold and the hottest it got in the back was 78 after a 2 hour drive. I would say it was working pretty good.
