How to get a stovetop cover

We NEVER use our gas stove and would like to cover it so we have more counter space and won't lose small items down the burners. Does anyone know where to get a cover, or have any ideas on how to make one?

I ended up with a very simple solution, at least for those who don't use the store. I NEVER will use the cooktop; if it can't be cooked on the grill or in the microwave it won't be heated! I took off the grills and knobs, taped some 1/2" dense foam in the burners to make a level surface, and laid a thick microfiber cloth designed for use as a dish-draining cloth. The cloth is tucked under the edges of the stovetop, but can easily be removed and washed when it gets soiled. It works great. Thanks for all your good comments.

Hi, I just went through this with my 88 Rv. I spent 2 days searching the web and finally went to my local metal worker. Had a cover made stainless steel that fit over my 2 burner cooktop. I measured the width and depth then added 1/2 inch to each of these dimensions. Then I measured from the counter top to the top of the burners (vertically). Add 1/4 inch to this dimension.
This gives you a rectangular cap that you can fit over the burners. About the bottom edge I put slit plastic tubing to keep it from rattling. We cut a piece of thick bubble wrap to put on top of the burners before putting the cover on for traveling to keep everything from rattling when traveling. When using the cook top we set the cover up vertically behind the burner. This forms a splash plate which we can wash as needed.
This cost us $81 (which included tax)which I think was a bargain. If you buy on the internet you may have to pay freight or if it isn't what you wanted, you will have to pay the freight back and maybe a re-stocking fee.

If you were closer I would give you one. I have removed them from all the RV's we have had.

I use a wooden one that I bought at cw many years ago. It has rubber grips that fit over the bars on the stove. Probably could be home made with the non slip material easily, but this one has worked well, and wasn't incredibly expensive.

I use a wooden cutting board that fits my stove top perfectly. I keep non-slip material under it when traveling.

I keep a clean folded bath towel over my stove. Works great, easy to clean, has never vibrated off onto the floor or anything. I always have to remember to check that the stove burners are cold before I put the towel back on.

If I need more hard-surface space, I lay a large cutting board on top of the towel.

If you contact a kitchen installer, often times they will remove a cut out from laminate counter top for the sink. they make excellent covers if you're not picky about color. Check around and be patient. They will usually be thrown in the trash. Otherwise, go to a home improvement store, such as Lowe's or Home Depot to find mis-measures or mistakes, available for a fraction of the cost of special order. Good luck.
