Microsoft Streets & Trips Program

Has anyone found a replacement for the program MS Streets & Trips ? I've been using it for years but MS has seen fit to end production.
I bought Delorme 2014, not even close and operation was very difficult, with common routing not useable.

I'm using S&T 2013 with a mounted GPS antenna, and have bought the updates for several years, planned a trip on it from AL to W. AZ with not a problem, found all RV gates of Military Bases using the GPS, it even recorded my missed turns, connected through a Dell 1010 netbook to MH audio system and HDMI to the front 32 inch TV some times when I need a larger picture controlled by my co-pilot and mouse. I see complaints about all the GPS map systems and will assume its what you get use to and feel right with, I contacted NAVTEK/Here who supplied the data to MS, the have no planes to produce a follow on program, nor sell updates to S&T.

I still use MS Streets & Trips. My copy is 2011. Roads don't change the much; so you don't need a new map to plan your trips. Just buy an old copy and have fun.

I didn't use it to find campgrounds but I would do similar to what GordonThree suggested. You can choose what time you want to start and end your day in preferences and manage individual days as necessary. I would look at the route and see plus or minus 50 miles from the end of the day if there was a good place to stop using GoodSam's directory. When you choose where you want to overnight, you can put that address as a destination and plan a stop. It will allow you to choose how many days you want to stop.

On my cross countries, we would have a week that was flexible but also reservations where we had to arrive on time. I could play around with stops to make sure make my reservations and still have flexibility to stop when I found something interesting.

Planning stops in the middle of the day was a feature I didn't find with other planners. You can also set how frequently and for how long you want rest stops, etc.

300 miles would be ~6 hours of driving at "average" speed as far as S&T is concerned, so set your start and end time roughly 6 hours apart. When you plan a route, you'll see the route log indicate where it's time to stop for the day.

It can show you what's around your daily stops, use the "Points of Interest" tool, set the range to something like 5-10 miles.

If you find a place to stay, or just the city the place is in and add it to your route as a stop be sure to set the stop time to 1 day - this will tell the router to start the next day at that location.

FYI It has been my experience that many campgrounds don't pay to be listed in whatever directory Microsoft pulls it's POI data from, so it's not a good tool for finding campgrounds.

Interestingly, the campground right up from my house shows on no online map, so they must have elected not to pay for any sort of online marketing. I guess they get enough business from word of mouth?

What I would like to have streets do for me is plan a 300/350 mile day then show the camping areas in that area. Is it capable of that? If so will you teach me how to make it happen?

I've used S&T to plan and execute three cross country trips, the most recent being 2014. Once upon a time, I used it with a GPS but in 2014 I used google maps for that although not without a lot of frustration of poor routing by google.

The beauty of T&S is being able to micromanage stops both overnight and in the day. We plan at least one recreational stop when passing through a state and it was easy to build in with T&S. I tired numerous online trip planners including a trial to a paid service and nothing could manage a timeline for a 30 day trip as well as T&S. I guess not enough people need that level of detail in a google maps world.

I'lll check out the recommendations here and subscribe to the thread for other ideas offered later.

I've been using Delorme since 2008. I've also upgraded to the 2015 version. I'll admit that it does have a learning curve, but once you know how to use it, it's very powerful. I use it for all my planning and as my GPS. I have a small form PC under the left side of the dash. It's connected to the front overhead 40 inch TV via an HDMI cable. I'm also using a wireless keyboard w/mouse. In the photo below the bottom part of the screen is the Silverleaf engine montioring system. While driving my wife controls the GPS. I've been using this setup now for about five years. It works well for me.

I've also planned numerous cross country trips. Most recently a 13,000 mile, 270 day round trip to Alaska this spring, summer and fall. It's very easy to set you preferences for how many miles/hours per day and when you need fuel stops based upon your mileage and tank size. Delorme will place indicators for nightly stops and fuel stops based upon these preferences. Then you can easily search these areas for the appropriate stops.

It also is very easy to import POIs using multiple formats, Excel, tab/comma delimited etc. I've got numerous POIs: Pilot/FlyingJ, Walmart, COE Campgrounds. State campgrounds etc. There are literally thousands of free files you can import from places like the POI Factory and numerous other sites.

I don't know about "streets for idiots instructions" but here's how to find campgrounds.

In Streets and Trips, go to a place (like a city).

Select tools...from the drop down box select "find nearby places"

Click on the box titled categories

Select campgrounds then click ok

In the left box, click the + symbol beside campgrounds (if it found any it will have the number there.

Clicking on each campground in the list will display its' location.

web based (free) programs & the proliferation of GPS' and SmartPhones beat 'em out...with out a customer base its simple economics !

enjoy S&T until July 14, 2015 - after that don't expect it to be supported, updated or to run on future OS releases !

I miss those "fun to fold" paper maps & my blackberry - but continuing to hold on the them (like MSFT S&T) is like swimming against the current.

S&T works for me because I want to know where I'm traveling and what's going on around me......Meaning freeway exits, highways, geography, rv parks and more! We don't plan where we're going, only a direction and then finding things as we go!

S&T worked great for our needs. Why did MS discontinue it and which company may offer a replacement?
