My DW says I'm anal/OCD.....am I?

Been getting the rig ready for a big trip. I've taken care of all maintenance and fixed everything that wasn't right. Lubed the chassis, wire brushed rust and painted it, fixed a cracked water fitting, replaced a drawer catch, serviced the air dryer, etc. However, since buying our Journey last fall, one thing has bugged me: The PO had been hit with some hail and the rear radiator looked like somebody had been throwing marbles at it. Lots of bent fins!

I know it is purely aesthetics, but it bugs me whenever I look at it! So yesterday I took the rear grill off, got a chair and started the painstaking process of straightening them out. About three hours work later, it looks great. DW looks at it and says, "whatever you want to spend your time doing....but I just don't see it." My neighbor even came over to see what I was doing and rolled his eyes and said basically the same thing.

Just wondering if anybody else has done this? In the end, it is a great feeling to know everything is in top shape....at least for the time being!

Hoping everybody has a great summer, and safe travels!

First of all, is Anal / OCD a bad thing? You almost make it sound as if it is a derogatory remark.

Secondly, these little tasks keep you in tune with your coach. The time you spend straightening out the fins allows you to monitor the condition of your cooling system and drive components. I would do exactly the same thing.

The last time I took my MH in for service, the gal walked through it and told me she was astonished at how clean and well maintained I kept my rig. She told me that most folks take no pride whatsoever in their coaches and she'd be embarrassed to show anyone a coach like those that come through for repairs.

I say keep it up. Whoever gets it next will be one lucky person.

If you want to eliminate this from happening in the future you could put some screen just inside the cover. This would stop the hail from getting to the radiator.

Yup, did the same kind of stuff when I was younger. Just think, by spending all that time straightening the fins allow it to operate more efficiently :B

After 35 years of marriage it all comes down to 2 rules:
1) DW is always right.
2) If I think DW is wrong refer to rule 1.

I straightened the fins on my A/C condensor which is the outermost heat exchanger in my cooling pack. Used two screwdrivers. It worked fine but the appearance bugged me. I am retired so I can pick what I want to waste my time on.

A fin comb would not have worked.

I must agree with all of the above, not only did you make it look right, you improved the radiator's efficiency and corrected a potential problem. Eventually all those blocked areas would have collected dirt/moisture and corroded the radiator.

I wonder if that coach was at the FMCA Gillette, WY rally last June. There was a hail storm that did that to a bunch of roof A/C units and rear radiators.

My former Marine DH is the same way! Painted the small vise in the joey bed and nobody ever sees it! Reorganizes compartments that nobody ever sees. Fixes things before they break! Which is good and greatly appreciated by me. All those eye rollers will face karma!

Jeff, I'm the same in a lot of ways. If there is something I can do myself I will certainly give it a try and I would be straightening out those fins too.

On my cars, I can't stand dirty wheels. I've been known to clean all the wheels before going to bed. Brake dust eats the finish on wheels and my cars will never have fogged headlights.

I wash my generator on the MoHo and I'm the only one that will see it. I also take the max vent covers off to clean the top of of the Fantastic vent fan covers (they do get dirty).

Safe travels,

X2 on if there were a lot of fins bent over it was a good thing to straighten them out, it will improve air flow and cooling, so tell the DW it wasn't OCD but required maintenance to help keep the motor cool.
