Overall length question

Hello all. I'm new to this and am thinking about getting a class A DP. When they list the length of a motorhome is that bumper to bumper or is it rear view mirror to the ladder and/or tailpipe in the back.

Thank you in advance for your help. Please excuse my naivete.

My 2004 Monaco Camelot 38 pst, is 40 feet long. It was measured for river trip charge $$ between Haines Alaska and Skagway Alaska. 38 pst is just the advertised model not the length.

I looked a the specs for a new 45' MH and the overall length was listed at 44' 11" so it looks like some take the 45' length restriction seriously.

I bet there are a lot of illegal RVs out there on the road. When western RV (Alpenlite) was in business I was touring their facility. We walked by a MH just off the assembly line. I pulled out my tape measure. (always carry one. retired leo) Measured exhaust height from ground. 30". So I ask the guide about exhaust being illegal in CA. No response. Exhaust cannot go to the side between 2 and 11 feet. Of course state to state may be different.

I guess first of all it would depend on which state you are in at the time. Maximum single unit length varies by state the same as maximum overall length for a combination does.

It may depend on the make and model. Our 40' is ~42 overall.

The number on the model is only a appox size not a meadsurement. I have a 33 and the specs say 34' 8". Add the mirror and you have about 35'. For the tax guy I tell them 33. :B

Overall length in specifications is usually bumper to bumper.

Numbers used in model names are not specifications of length. They are just model names.

My model is a 36DBD which would lead one to believe it is 36 feet.

Front bumper to rear bumper is about 37'11".

Go figure.
