I'm watching a couple hook up their tow vehicle this morning. The husband is standing between the rear of the motor home and the car directing his wife driving the car into position. One slip on the accelerator and he's crushed. PLEASE don't do this. Stand off to the side if you need to give the driver directions.

I have to admit, I do that a lot - straddle the tow bar while DW pulls the car (although very slowly) up to it. After reading this thread however, may have to re-think that.

I use the yellow balls on the magnetic rods and they work great for me, wife stays in the motorhome.

I think the OP got off pretty lucky. He can hide behind "I was just trying to help", but there are certain unwritten rules of etiquette/common sense:

You don't insult a guy's backing/parking ability and you don't get to judge his hitching up method. It's as bad as insulting his wife.

You can take pot shots at his windchimes though. Preferably with a 12 gauge.
G-half can always find a way to do things upside-down, inside-out or backward.

My wife loves the motorhome so she's extra careful when pulling the toad up. She figures I can move...:B.

Brian, thanks for the 'safety reminder'. Always a good thing.

Now can we talk about wearing gloves to empty the sewer...:h:h...Dennis

I do exactly what the OP pointed out, and I frequently think about how easy it would be to get pinned in the space available. I tend to keep alert and hope I can jump clear if something does go wrong, but that doesn't stop me from continuing to do what is really a stupid thing on my part wnen I am fully aware of what could happen. I know better and knew better before this thread was started, but others may benefit from reading it.

This has been a very good thread where a "like" button would have been appreciated a lot. There's a lot of good responses.

Supercub was just trying to point out a possible safety issue.

To jump on the woodpile, I usually connect the car by myself 99% of the time. The Blue Ox setup is easy and if you are not too close to the back of the motorhome, the arms stretch a good bit to make up for any short comings.

Safe travels,
MM.

I stand between and wife drives the Jeep....and she stands between and I drive at times.

You first have to have FAITH in the toad driver and that persons abilities!

This is second hand info but it is true. My friend and his wife were in a campground and saw a wife run the toad into her husband and their class A. She bounced back, panicked, and hit the accelerator hitting he and the rig even harder. My friends rendered assistance until the ambulance arrived. He had severe trauma to both legs and his back. BTW I don't have a horse in this race because I tow a 5th wheel.

Sounds like she was trying to finish the job.

People stand under the front of the 5th wheel, while the other backs up.

I'm the original poster. I saw this happen this morning and thought it unsafe. I shared this, only for safety reasons. It's amazing how some people become so defensive. I never said you couldn't do this, but just "please don't do it" If you feel it's safe, I guarantee the "tow hookup police" won't cite you. I hook up by myself every time. I have some visual markers I use and seldom have to get back into the car to adjust it. As far as comparing to walking in front of a parked car or eating in a restaurant and having a car drive thru the wall .....those cars typically have to be put into reverse to back out of the space.....so for an accident to happen there, they have to be put into "Drive" and accelerated. Hooking up a tow vehicle, the car is already moving forward towards you and just a slip of the pedal can end in disaster.
It is up to you if you want to put yourself in this situation.....is it safe or unsafe.....you decide. I just hope, that maybe someone that hadn't thought about it, will now reevaluate this practice. It will be up to the individual if they want to change the process or not. I wasn't trying to change the world, just to make it a little safer.........gee........some of you need to take a chill pill 🙂 and do what you want. Can't wait to see what kind of hole I dug myself into with this one LOL Happy RVing
