Spare tire class A motorhome

I recently purchased a 2010 Damon Daybreak Class A Motorhome from a dealer. I noticed that there was not a spare tire included with the unit. When I questioned the dealer about this, he said newer motor homes do not come with spare tires. Is that correct? Danny 71

My 2001 gasser (19.5inch tires) came with a spare...in a spare tire compartment. I was told that in later years,this was discontinued.

With 22.5 inch tires, yeah...I can understand that. Heavy. Impact gun needed. Absolutely. Plus the fact that the 22.5 inch tires are (as I'm told) the same for 18 wheelers, so replacements are easy. With 19.5 inch tires, not as heavy, impact gun preferred...but Coach-net always asks if you 1-have a spare and 2- does it have air? (Replacements are more difficult as truck tire outfits don't generally have spares) My response to both are: "yes". Even tho...the TWO times I needed Coach-net for tire problems (on the road) their trucks had air compressors on them ready to use.

Try finding a 295/80R22.5 or an 8R19.5F in rural Texas. You might be there a while!

The don't come with one. Since I wouldn't be able to change it anyway, it's sort of a moot point. 19.5 and 22.5 RV tires are pretty easy to find so I would just let coachnet bring me one and put it on while I sit back and sip a cool one.

I carry a mounted spare & tools to change it. If your MH uses an oddball size (and many do), even an unmounted tire can be a trip-saver!

The W series Workhorse chassis all require 475 ft pounds of torque for either their 19.5 or 22" wheels.
Using basic hand tools and a breaker bar extension I can still get all of my lug nuts loose on my Workhorse chassis. If you use a torque multiplier attachment, it is even easier. The wheels are still heavy although any road service still only sends ONE man out to change a tire. Mounting and removing the wheel is somewhat easy. Getting the spare wheel out of and in to the basement compartment is where the wheel weight is an issue.

Our 2008 Winnebago Sightseer came with a mounted 245/70 R 19.5 spare that is carried in a compartment beneath our bed accessed from a door on the drivers side above the generator. I recently had a flat at home. Called Good Sam and had roadside service in less than an hour. The tech removed my flat and leak checked to find bad seal at the rim. He removed the tire from the rim with two tire irons, cleaned the rim remounted the tire, checked for leaks and then put it back on the Winnebago. Spare tire never left the compartment. I may not be so lucky next time so I will keep the spare. Tech was from Bretton tire service in Brockton, MA

OUr Sunova came with mounted spare carried high up in a compartment under the rear bed. Two problems, one, it is accessed from the road side of the vehicle, not the curb side and two, it is HEAVY!.

I built a carrier that mounts on my hitch. I also built an extension that allows me to use a hoist to lift the tire back up onto the mount. I also carry a 42" breaker bar and a jack.

Side benefit, we now have an extra compartment!

the answer to your question is no they don't come with one. Whether or not you choose to carry one is up to you

I also carry a mounted 19.5 tire in a lower compartment of my 2000 HR Endeavor. I have a 20 ton bottle jack in case the on board jacks could not be used and a 3 foot breaker bar with a heavy duty deep socket.

I have not had to change one on the road but have removed and replaced a couple in my driveway over the years. If it was an unsafe location I might call for help, but otherwise I could change it out myself.

It's harder to get the tire in and out of the compartment than it is to change it.

After removing the bad tire, I stand the new one up and sit down facing it with my legs around it, sort of like getting ready to give it a hug and lift it about 1/2 inch using my legs and arms to get it on the lugs.

Tighten up, lower rig, re-tighten and off you go....

The key is only having to lift it about a 1/2 inch. Just need enough room to slide the old one off.

Our 2001 Brave came with a mounted 19.5 spare as did our previous Itasca Wind Cruiser. I changed tires twice on the road with the Itasca, never had to yet on the Brave but I like having a spare even if I couldn't change the tire myself.

There is no way my wife could handle a spare tire. We carry an unmounted spare in a compartment but we could not get the 22.5" wheels loose anyhow. The mounted spare weighs around 150# and takes 450# of torque to take on and off.

Luckily our MY2000 HR came with a spare 19.5 tire and rim. It is in the lower part of the basement compartment that also houses the propane tank. The current spare has never been on the road and is about 8 years old.

Not true, get a spare tire, wheel optional, if you travel on weekends, holidays, nights etch, and you have a flat you will be really happy you had it. Having had 3 flats in my rving life I speak from some experience, had a flat on I 95 in Florida on mothers day, called road service, first question. Do you have a spare? When service guy showed up I asked him if I didn't have a spare what were my consequences. He said it has been a busy weekend and they were sold out of tires in my size. Should get some in by Tuesday or Wednesday. Then I questioned prices, 25% more than I paid for the spare I was carrying.
