We always stay at Alpen Rose as it is a really nice clean well kept campground. The big rig sites are really nice and the dog park is fantastic. As stated don't miss Silverton as it is only 36 miles north. Enjoy.

Check out United Campground. Its the one SHEPFLY refers to in his post.
Ask for a site front row facing the train tracks. Wave at the old steam locomotive going to Silverton. Clean and neat place with nice hosts.

I also prefer Alpen Rose. I stayed in the bigger and open sites at the front. Lots of room. The dog park was also great.

Many years ago we stayed at CG on North side of Durango on the road to Silverton and the great thing was the narrow gauge railroad ran right thru the CG. They also had a team of miniature horses which gave wagon rides for guests. My favorite was glider rides given by a local dentist from the grass field North of Durango on the way up to Silverton. On the road to Silverton there was a ski resort which had a concrete raceway which you rode down on individual sleds, which had been taken up on the ski lift. Hope some of these features still exist, we had a great time!

You also might want to check out "Lightner Creek Campground". We have friends that workcamp there and is a very nice campground

Alpen Rose is the nicer park. The Animas Valley location far surpasses the KOA.

Just my opinion and I have stayed at both.

Which side of town do you want to be on?
I think KOA is right on a 4 lane hwy.
Alpen Rose sits back off on a 2 lane road.
I like to chase the train in my vehicle and I stay at Alpen Rose.

Haven't stayed at either. But rvparkreviews.com gives a slight edge to the KOA. Price looks about the same for both. Looks like you can't go wrong with either.
