Just serviced my 2003 kountry star 5.9 (cummins). put 5 gal of oil in and now it shows overfull, I THINK that's what I put in before. Maybe just having a senior moment? How much are the 5.9 owners using in there's. Thanks for any light that can be shed on this.

Do what Wolfe10 told you to do. Call Cummins Customer Care and give them your engine number. They will tell you exactly how much oil your engine holds! They will tell you what size oil pan you have too! The 5.9 had several different sizes of oil pans. All you need to do is look at the variety of answers you got here, and that is enough to tell you to go to the manufacturer!!! 800-343-7357

Got my answer, kind of.
Freightliner said 16 to 17 qt of oil.
Cummins said add 15.9 qt, start engine, let idle a few minutes, shut engine off and let set for oil to settle in pan, check oil and add to the fill line.
thanks for the input.

Best, repeat best advice is to call Cummins with your engine serial number. Far better than assuming yours is the same as that in a PU or other brand chassis motorhome.

I just helped a mechanic friend pull a 5.9 out of a 2001 Freight Liner flat bed (ran good but had cracked #53 block). I drained the oil and to my surprise it completely filled a 5 gallon bucket. So apparently some of these engines in HD applications hold more oil.

You're getting answers that go from 12 to 17 quarts. There are different pans and capacities for different motor homes and in the trucks. You should call cummins with your s/n and get the CORRECT info.

Is the 5.9 cummins in the m/h the same engine as the one they use in the pickups. I have been told that they were different in the m/h.

I buy 5 gals when I change the oil and filter. Use about 4.75 gals and my oil level shows at the bottom of the full mark on the dip stick.

Our 5.9 takes 14 quarts, but I believe it's dependent on pan size...be sure your dipstick is calibrated to the pan......check with Cummins for engine SN? IMHO

The 5.9L Cummins in the Dodge Ram pickups take 12 qt(3.0 gal)
Have no idea if that is increased when the motor is put into a motor home
Maybe it time to check you owners manual

All the searches I did for the 5.9 cummins shows 12 quarts. I don't know if this is different for a MH with maybe a deeper pan.

It also says some MH's have a 15 qt pan and some have a 17 qt pan.
