Yes you were lucky, no crack block. The next big question is where did the gallon of fluid go? The most probable cause is a crack overflow tank, but I would keep an eye on the water pump's weep hole for signs of leaking, and also the oil. Not to make you nervous, but blown head gaskets can happen.
