What to do in high crosswinds

On our way back from Florida we had a lot of rain and 30mph crosswinds and had to fight to keep the motorhome on our side of the road. This made for a not so nice drive home. We have a 2004 Four Winds Class A, 33'. Has new tires. Is there anything that can help when you are in crosswinds? Better control. Or should we just find a place to stop for the day? This was very scary trying to keep the motorhome on my side of the road. Not fun at all for sure. Was very tired when we did get home. Thanks

30 MPH? I don't even think I notice it that much at only 30mph. Even over 40mph straight cross isn't too bad, wheel is cocked hard into the wind and when the wind gets shielded it is kind of strange. Quartering head winds are what I don't like.

I do feel bad when I pass a TT or smaller MH in the wind and it makes them sway a bit. Wish there was something I could do. Just know when you see me coming up from behind there will be turbulence. I am sorry. (and don't say "don't pass them". it isn't an option)

Your rig makes a difference. The ones passing you were probably DP with a tag. I drove home in 30 mph winds and it was work but doable. The gust are what trick you up especially coming out from under an overpass. I know I can not drive my Born Free in weather I am ok in with the FT. Both run fine in normal weather.

This has been posted on the forum, but it's a great reminder of what wind can do to an RV (TT and Dually TV).

seems trite, but I just slow down. Today coming back from Temecula we had 30 to40mph cross winds. I dropped my speed to 50mph, as did many of the big rigs, and I sat heavier on the road. I've driven the California desert to Las Vegas over the Cajon Pass with gusts at 60mph or more, really, trucks going fast are blown over, you see it on the news. Anyway, just drop your speed until the rig sits comfortable. It works for me.
Happy Trails.

Read your profile. I am a Vet (Seabees) too. I'd recommend you stop and put in til the wind quits. What could possibly be so important that you would risk a rollover in that kind of weather? Having drive 4.2 milion miles I have seen plenty of rollovers caused by high winds. Ain't pretty! I can never figure people out. Me? I'd be watching TV and snoozing.
In Oklahoma we did what the Chinese do when the wind blows. Let it blow.

When ever you do not feel comfortable driving in any kind of weather find a place to park it until the weather clears.

Thanks guys. Appreciate the advice. I think "PARK IT" is the way to go when we feel unsafe. Not ready for the pine box yet. lol

If the wind it hitting the right side make a quarter turn to the left and if it is hitting the left side make a quarter turn to the right. That will give you a tail wind and increase your MPG also. :B

You might try moving some weight from behind the read axle to the front of the MH adding more steering traction.

About all you can do is slow down even if that means down to 40 but the best thing to do is get off the road until the winds die down.

I was not going over 55mph because of the crosswind and had other motor homes pass me and seem to be doing ok I guess. This is why I did not pull over. If they can keep on going I figured I could also and just fought it. Also seen other motorhomes coming from the other direction heading south doing about 65 or more. I was wondering what did they have that I did not. But think most were D-Pushers. How come they do not seem to be pushed around as I was? I saw some big rigs being pushed around a little. They too were passing me.

In my experience it is as much about the individual driver as it is about the coach itself. People have different levels of experience with large vehicles as well as naturally different tolerances.

I have repeatedly heard where one driver is completely happy with a given setup and another driver is completely dissatisfied with the exact same setup.

The moral of the story is you should never drive in a situation that feels scary to YOU, regardless of what others are doing. I would park somewhere next time.

You can spend a lot of money on fix's that help but do not FIX the problem, the best fix is know your limits and get off the road when you feel unsafe.

IMO a day or even two days late to wherever you are going is better than trying to figure out how to get home AFTER an accident.
