Camper Oven Tips

My wife and I just moved up from a Hybrid camper to a TT. Our new TT has a oven which means I can now pack away the old Coleman collapsible oven.

Do I need to do any modifications to the oven to make it really usable? On the test burn, it seemed to put off a lot of heat. Do I need to add any thermal mass? What about a external thermometer? How dependable are the settings on the oven knob?

The oven is a Suburban SRNA3 oven/cook top combination.

I finally put in 4- 6x6 tiles and an oven thermometer. Found out my oven was off by 50-75 degrees. With the tiles and adjusted temps., baking is improving!

Try here. Round or square..most any size:
pizza stones
Tile is cheaper though.............

Mine came from Home Goods...and yes, the first two or three(that didn't fit) I use at home now! Kept one for the grill-use it to make pizza, calzones, and all kinds of toasted sandwiches and such-have a foil wrapped brick that works good as a press.

X2. One of the best mods we ever did. RV ovens are way too hot at the bottom and tend to burn the bottom of everything. The pizza stone evens out the heat. You can use an unglazed floor tile too which is cheaper. I've done both and both work.

Best way to light without crawling into the oven. Campfire weenie stick with votive candle glued to the fork.

I have the best luck using the AirBake cookie sheets and cake pans along with the stone.

Second the stone...and I use a big old cast iron pan in there too. Actually leav both the stone and pan in most times and utilize whichever pan works for what's being cooked(not that we use the oven that often)

*Unglazed 12" terra cotta tile is what we use..pizza stones too expensive
*Oven thermometer....oven knob can be way off
*Broil setting just keeps gas flame on vs regulating via temperature. I have slipped some items under the gas flame to broil them but you have to watch closely cause items will be reaaaaally close to flame
*Pre-heat oven.......
*You will need different sheet pans/cookie sheets.......small ones

We did a 15lb turkey at Thanksgiving......course all our oven side dishes had to wait.
Is it time for your medication or mine?

Invest in a very good oven thermometer and forget the dial settings. Think a little lower heat and a little longer cooking. Turning frequently helps even out the rough spots. Also, roasting becomes brazing, and a great cast iron dutch oven without legs is the key.

They put off lots and lots of heat, so don't get rid of that oven. We seldom use our indoor oven unless we are camping in the early spring or late fall - it just gets too hot inside.

If you do decide to use it then Yes, put a pizza stone or unglazed terra cotta tile on the bottom rack and cook pretty much as you would at home, but keep an eye on it.
