NYCgrrl,
Our daughter likes waffles better than pancakes so we bought her this one for $10, new. It makes pretty darn good waffles.

Waffle maker

Not too shabby.

NYCgrrl I know you said you don't want to buyone, but if you change your mind, Rome of pie iron fame makes a cast iron model. It would work well for dry camping.

I actually owned a Coleman waffle iron but am too lazy to use it OR the pie irons either:E. Sold em this winter after 2 years of dragging them to the campsite and never using em past re-seasoning them, LOL.

I could live investing 10 bucks for an electric waffle iron and then facing the consequences of whatever I did wrong. Just for the record my kiddos could NEVAH get away with this behavior but but she's so cute. And of course I can send her home.....;)

I'm trying to borrow a waffle maker from someone to make frozen waffles cuz I see no reason to buy an appliance I'll only use once in 5 years, lol.
Suggestion: you might be able to buy one for a couple of bucks at a yard sale or thrift store.

Actually I've been looking for one on and off at thrift shops for several years. The only one I'd be making them for is DGD since the man and I really aren't breakfast eaters in general. So far DGD has been happy with the rest of the morning foods I've made her except my homemade ground with love sausage patties since they were the wrong shape(not links). And my baked oatmeal because she likes steelcut oatmeal, blueberries, nuts, and maple caramel but only separated. O right and she doesn't like breakfast burritos for the same mixing of food reasons. :h
It's alllll coming back to me why I haven't actively pursued a waffle iron.....:B

All the folks that commented on the reviews were ecstatic about them so I'll give them a try on our trip next week. They really just need to be a pallet for the yummy and unhealthy stuff I plan on burying them with.

When my husband goes camping with his buddies I sometimes buy a loaf of thick sliced french bread, do the whole thing up as already-cooked French toast, and stack it back in the bag. Keeps well either frozen or just refrigerated- depends on how long you want to keep it.
Throw a couple slices in the frypan/griddle to reheat after you've cooked your bacon, or if you have a gas grill just put them on there.

We never have ac power but for those who do and want to reheat that way, I recommend a plain ol' toaster over the microwave, which I think makes bread things tough.

Similar on my end except on special occasions I replace the milk/cream with melted vanilla or rum raisin ice cream and freeze it in an aluminum pan. When you place the French toast back in the bag do you flash freeze it first or put say waxpaper pieces in between the toast slices?

I've found that banana pancakes freeze nicely with lil rubbery texture. I'm trying to borrow a waffle maker from someone to make frozen waffles cuz I see no reason to buy an appliance I'll only use once in 5 years, lol.

I used to make pancakes and then freeze the excess (single person). Thaw out and 'wave or just 'wave.
