Best kept secret in Windows 7 & 8

A friend shared with me about a neat little program included in Windows 7 & 8.

It is called "Snipping Tool", you can find it by doing a search from your start button or search box. When you find it, I would recommend right clicking and select "pin to task bar", since I know you will be using it a lot.

When you open the program it allows you to select any part of your desktop by holding down the left button and drawing the box to save it as a picture.

You can also click on the highlight pen to highlight the exact item you want people to see.

I think it might help a lot of people to make their point in a more visual manner.

Try it for yourself.

IMO, this is the best kept secret in Windows and the best part it is FREE!!

Let me know if you agree...

Thanks,
Terry

The Grab utility is the only capture app I use on MAC OS X.

Windows "snipping tool" first made its appearance in Windows XP Tablet PC Edition. It was also in Vista.

Been that-a-way for years, grasshopper....:C

Does Command/Shift/4 let you select between a full-screen, window, rectangular, or free-form capture? The Windows Snipping Tool does...

Command-Shift-4 can only do one thing; capture a rectangular region that one selects by dragging the cursor.

Command-Shift-3 captures the entire screen.

After Command-Shift-4, if one taps the spacebar, the cursor becomes a camera. If one move the camera to any portion of any window, clicking will capture that window, even if the window is almost completely covered. It also allows one to capture menus or other "actions".

Since I write a lot of tutorials, the latter is important to me.

For those that have trouble remembering keyboard shortcuts, MAC OSX includes a Grab utility with those functions and a "Timed" capture that captures the screen 10 seconds after the capture button is clicked. That allows one to activate portions of the screen for the capture. For example, that would allow me to include the cursor in the above picture.

One would have to go to third-party software to get a free-forum capture for MAC OSX.

It is my experience, almost anything I want to do on one platform, I can do on another - sometimes easier, sometimes less so. For much of my work, I find the keyboard shortcuts quicker.

One of my favorite apps is Faststone Capture. It's portable, so requires no install. And has much more extensive editing capabilities than the Snipping Tool. In fact, you can just drag-n-drop an image file on top of Faststone Capture, and it will open in its editor.

The last freeware version was v5.3 back in 2007, but works with Windows 7/8. It's still available for download here. The download file has been checked on VirusTotal.com and comes up clean.

if you go here you may end up also downloading a download manager but if you go here you'll end up at the publisher's website and avoid the additional download manager.

Unfortunately, not completely accurate. I checked the Faststone Capture download link, and its for the full v5.3 app which is quite small. It's not a downloader. In fact, it's a zip file @1.1MB.

The link to the publisher is for the current, "paid" shareware version of Faststone Capture. Go there for the updated version. But the freeware version ended in 2007, yet works fine in Windows 7/8. It hasn't been available on the Publisher's site for many years.

Done, thank you.. I may have uses for it. Epically since I can not post photos here.

Try using bit.ly/photo-upload. Just need to drag-n-drop a photo from your computer, then copy-n-paste the specific RV.NET forum link. Takes an average of 7 secs.

It is more selective than 'Save image' and is faster to use. Great app! Thanks for the tip.

I still can't get access to the SNIPPING TOOL. I see it listed and followed all the things GOOGLE said to do to enable it.

After reading up on it it only takes a screen shot of what ever you want to capture and assigns a JPG and whatever name you want to name it. You will still have to goto a program like IMGUR to get a HTTP address assigned to the filename before you can add to a image post anyway. It would only save me one step doing it the ALT -PRINT SCREEN way here for me. I can also add NOTES and arrows etc using the paint program before I save it or copy it which is usually what I do. Then I can delete the JPG by not saving it after I have sent it IMGUR.

Have no idea why either one of ADM OWNERS here on our WIN7 Home Premium can't access it to use, SNIPPING TOOL shows up on the start button just fine but says we don't have permission to open it up.

PROPERTIES for SNIPPING TOOL says we have FULL PERMISSION...

I don't think it will really help me here that much anyway anyway... Maybe save one step in my process of sending captured screen shot photo's.

Thanks for the tips anyway...
